I just had a 727 trans rebuilt for my Dart Sport. I noticed when the car is first started and put into reverse within a couple of seconds the trans seems to be sluggish. If I put it back into park and let it idle say 30 more seconds it goes into reverse fine. I also here a distinct whine when in reverse. Is this normal? I have another rebuilt trans in my Duster and it does the same thing. Same problem and noise.

It was a poor rebuild sorry, most cases it is front pump drain back that is the no pressure no reverse delay. Worn pump and bushings.

Most likely unfortunately the rebuilder did not check all the clearances, replace all thrust washers, and bushings etc.Setup correct clearances on input shaft to out put shaft, drum clearance specs etc. for clutch packs the works. Sounds like a quickie rebuild to me.

Most rebuilds are at best soft parts and seals only. I would pull it out and have it done the 100% correct way! Sorry:)

Thanks Dave. Will this shorten the life of the trans? Or can it work once fluid is circulated? This latest trans rebuild has been a nightmare. I dont want to go back. Any thoughts on rebuilt units that I can buy from somewhere?

Well that is hard to say, it is just to bad it is not tight and firm quick to respond etc. I have had old Mopars do the convertor pump drain back issue, it should be ok. I found I used to start the car, taake it out of P and put in in N for about 15020 secs then she was OK.

goog luck sorry!

I've seen alot of them that have the drain back problem last a long time but you can't just throw them into gear as soon as you start it up and take right off. Not only will it slip the converter which will toast it and the fluid but you don't get anywhere fast. You have to put it in neutral for about 20 seconds to let the converter fill up and then you can go on your merry way. Doing that will greatly lengthen the life of the trans.
