73 dart a/c heater hose?

I am doing a 73 Swinger back to original. It is a 318-2brl with A/C. The heater hose nipple coming out of the manifold is for 5/8" hose which then goes to the heater valve, then to the firewall. The problem I have is that the original heater valve has 1/2" nipples, as does the heater core. So how was the 1/2" hose connected to the 5/8" manifold nipple. The manifold is the original and only has 3/8"NPT threads for the 5/8" nipple????? Anyone got pics??
 
That's how I thought it should be, but why do I have a 5/8" nipple on manifold instead of a 1/2"?
 
my 73 Duster is the same way as Urdustds 74, some one must have changed it at one time?
 
i think that might be how its supposed to be lol. idk why but i think almost all the old mopars i have worked on have been that way. i know my scamp was and is that way and it was truley a old ladys so i doubt it was changed. i used 5/8 hose and tightened it down tight. its long enough and has the rib at the end so it holds good and dose not leak. i really dont know why it is that way tho
