Sorry for the over due answer to your question Fst. I didn't realize anyone had commented on this thread and hadn't checked it in months.
All I did for the interior surface rust was treat everything to a good coat of rattle can rust encapsulator from Eastwood and then topped it off with rubberized spray insulation.
