I'm rebuilding an 8 3/4 rear end for my Valiant and the ring / pinion set and the installation kit that I bought don't work. This is what I'm starting with...

- 8 3/4 w/ 741 case

- Cone-type Sure-Grip #2881343 (I believe from the years '69-'73) with 2" bearing journals

- Pinion stem diameter is 1 3/8" and has a ten-tooth spline

I ordered the 355 gear set and installation kit for a 741 case. Most of the bearings were the wrong diameter and the pinion had a 1 3/4 diameter stem with a 29-tooth spline.

What's weird, what I started with or what I purchased?

29 spline pinion with 1 7/8" inner (large bearing area) stem is for a 489 rear which would also explain why the bearings are to large for the 741 case. Who ever sold you the parts screwed up.
