8 ¾ What may have caused this?

Swapping rear end and recently picked up an 8 ¾. It’s open, but I want to put a sure grip in it so I took it apart today. Look at the pictures. Everything else looks good. But the diff is damaged just where the bolts are in more than one place.

I agree, it seems as if someone got a little aggressive on the machining of the outside of the carrier. It seems small compared to ring gear, but I have not been inside an 8.75 recently.
 
Carrier was made on a Friday afternoon, or Monday morning. :D

Yeah I think that casting was machined until it cleaned up. Intersecting the bolt relief was of no consequence.
Like they say "ship it with a note" LOL
 
Alright. Thanks for answering. Is it ok to clean the old oil of with break cleaner?
 
Maybe its just me but it looks like the last person who tightened the ring gear up used a real thick socket and that's what broke the pieces off at the places it did. Maybe?
