I'm looking at a 8 1/4 limited slip 3rd member out of a 79 Diplomat. It's for my 8 1/4 rear end in my 75 Dart. any ideas?

I have a 8 1/4 suregrip in my 67 dart gt w/ a 360. It's got a 3.21 but, I love it! If your not putting a Big block in it, go for it!

I have a 360 w/ a 904 currently. I am also driving around with the original 7 1/4 rear with 273 gears. The 8 1/4 that I will be replacing currently has 245 gears. I was told that I had to get a new 3rd member to do the gear change. I found a guy selling a 3rd member out of the Diplomat with 293 gears. I was wondering if there was a differance between a 79 8 1/4 to 75 8 1/4.

I didnt know a 8 1/4 had a 3rd member. Do you mean an 8 3/4? Or am i incorrect in what they are called:read2:

Good question, I'm pretty sure that all rear ends have 3rd members. I'm going to call this guy in regards to it.

Just got off the phone with the guy, all it needs is new bearings. The limited slip and gears look good. All for $70.00. I'm going to pick it up next week.

Sublimeswinger is implying that the 8.25 doesn't have a removable center chunk like an 8.75, which is technically the "3rd member".

As far as I have been able to research, all 8.25" carriers are interchangeable, up until 1997, when they changed to a 29 spline pattern.

The only exception is that your 2.45 carrier is a lerger diameter to accomodate the ultra big ring gear. I have the same prob, but I am upgrading to the 29 spline from a 2004 Dakota. The only catch is that I am having Moser cut me a new set of axles with the right spline.
