I have a 8 1/4 diff out of a 73 duster that has 2.45 gears. I have read that the carrier is different than any other gear ratio. My question is if I get a carrier for 2.71-4.10 can I put it into my housing or is it different also?
I looked for it and could not spell your user name, Hop's is all I could come up with at the time , Thank you super member and friendMike your slipping we beat this one to death here
The 8 1/4 thread
post 1 shows the difference between them
I'm thinking of going the "new" route also. My car is a '75 318 Scamp with an open 2.45's. The only upgrades so far are a 4bbl and dual exhaust with the stock manifolds. I've read all these threads about upgrading 8 1/4's and I'm still confused, probably because I'm in uncharted territory!
1. If I buy a new sure grip carrier and new ring and pinion gears am I good to go? (I found a Mopar Performance 8 1/4 sure grip on Summit or Jegs for $386.) I'm looking at 3.21 or 3.55 gears.
2. Thinking about 3.21 gears, more highway than city driving. I did not find any 3.23 gears for an 8 1/4 read end, only 3.21's. Were 3.23's for early years than 1975?
3. My rear end is offset, can this be done? My rear end is off the car now so this may be the time to do it. Thanks in advance for the help.

1st, Welcome to the site !!Just a question: what rpm do you get with 318/904- 8 1/4 wirh 2.45 gears?

I'll put a tach in my car, but I'd guess you are about right. I have 235/60R15 is the only difference.A good chunk of the RPM also depends on the overall size of the wheel/tire, namely the rear tire if they're the offset front/rear size.
So I calculated the estimate (automatic trans slip included) with 245/60R15 (26.5 inch diameter tires) to be approximately around 2200-2300 RPM at 70 mph.

Love it on the road, though....
