I'm putting a sure grip in my 8 1/4 I got all the bearing sizes worked out. I know I have to shim up the pinion gear behind the race. Looks like I need about 1/8 in shim does that sound right?. Does anyone have a dimension from a dummy shaft fitted in the carrier bearing race bores to the top of the pinion shaft bearing ID bearing race. I can't find the set up tools mopar used for anything Thanks Jim

1/8" sounds like a tremendous amount to have to shim a pinion. If you're just swapping in a sure grip and reusing your gears you shouldn't be messing with the pinion height. If it has too much backlash you shim up the side carrier bearings to get it right.

Yea I found out I shimmed up the pinion gear 1/8 and it hit the suregrip carrier.and still not enough carrier bearing adjustment. No choice but to shim up the ring gear. I'm sure I can make a good flat ring gear shim I just have to figure out how thick thanks for the replies Jim

Glad to help Jim. Sounds like you have the wrong carrier for your gear set. There were 2 carriers for 8-1/4"s depending on what gear ratio you have. I can't remember what the gear ratio split was but I bet RustyRatRod would know. You might try messaging him

I got the carrier off ebay out of a dakota or something new If all I have to do is make shim than I'll do that. I just wish I could get a pinion measurement I'll try Rusty

Most Dakota's had 3.55 gears so that's most likely the carrier for the lower gear ratio sets. If I remember right 8-1/4's also had an axle spline change somewhere along the way. Have you tried your axles to make sure they're compliant with the sure grip? Would suck to get it all set up and find out you need axles too. Are you using your old gears or installing new ones? I believe summit sells a pinion depth measuring tool specifically for the 8-1/4 made by Ratech

axles fit fine but I will check out Summit again new gears and strange they are 3.55 Thanks for the reply and info Jim

I just looked on Summit's site and don't see one for the 8-1/4". I thought I did a couple yrs back but it's not there now. You may try googling "Ratech" and call them and see if they have it. If they have it but only sell to distributors get the part # and call Summit and tell them you talked to Ratech and give them the part number and they'll order it for you

I appreciate all the help and info I've gotten. I think in the end I have to make the paint right. It looks like a little trial and error is nessessary again thanks all Jim
