I'm looking at replacing the gears in my 8.25. I know that I have 2.43's which would mean I would have to get a new carrier to run a bigger gear. Would this one work for my rear?
No it will not work your carrier is for 2.56 and higher gears (the higher ratio is lower numerically) Here is a thread that will answer all the questions. Unfortunately you have to get a new rear end housing to run that, there is a track lock unit around that will fit if you want those gears in it. The 8 1/4 thread
You do not need to change the housing. Just buy that carrier and install any gear larger then 2.71:1 you want, if your 8.25 is the older produced between 72-96 with 27 spline axles
