Can anyone measure the distance from the end of the housing to the axle seal? Many thanks
 
I think that there is a lip in the axle that the seal will contact to stop. This is the depth for it, enough to clear the bearing.
 
And don't forget to clean and repack the axle bearings.
 
Yes the seal will bottom out. But have a look first to see that the lip is even in there. One side of mine bottomed at a slight angle. It never leaked but always bothered me that it wasn't quite straight. Perfection can drive one insane! Ha!
 
seal depth from face of housing flange to face of installed seal is 1.680 inches (1 11/16 ) as stated above there is a lip to bottom the seal to so it does not contact the bearing lock collar.
if you are measuring from the backing plate surface add 1/8 inch for the thickness of the backing plate
