can you still get a 5.38 gear for a 742 case? a 5.57 would be alright also.

Doesn't look like it. 5.13 seems to be the max. A shorter tire diameter would effectively lower the ratio without having to do the gears to the 5.57 or 5.38 level. Just a thought...

right now i have a 1-1 fourth gear with a 29.5 x 9 and a 5.13 going through the traps @ 95 mph @ 5500 rpm. if i had a 5.57 with a 28 x 10 it would get me close to 7000 rpm. this is 1/8th mile heads up racing lbs/ci.

I'm assuming that 7000 is the shift point, I'd still look at going with less tire diameter. It is by far cheaper and easier to do, rather than a gear change. I guess what I'm truing to say is; do you really need that much "cushion" in the tire diameter?
Also, with less diameter you'll have better tire clearance. That 29.5 must be horrifically close on an A body. I had a 30.5 on a B and it rubbed when it "grew".
