8-3/4 PINION SLOP

I'm looking at a complete A-body 8-3/4 rear at a fantastic low price. 741 case, 3:55 SG cone type
Problem is I can grab the yoke and the pinion will move +/- 1/4 inch.
I'm guessing pinion bearing/seal is shot but what else could be wrong inside? Gears? bearings?
Never took one apart. Picking it up this Saturday and will be stored as a spare.

That sloppy, consider it a core, ring carrier bearings may have survived.

In and out or side to side?

Side to side, up and down
I can turn the pinion by hand
Probably has to be rebuilt
Or locate another carrier unit
I can’t pass up on it, picking it up on Saturday $ less than $100.
Just wondering if someone had a similar issue and what was the internal damage

Well if the nut wasn`t backed off the bearings are shot, and if it was run like that for any length of time it probably wrecked the R+P.
