What are the differences in the 8.75 splines for the yoke. Im trying to find a yoke for a 742 and I know the 489 will not fit but what about the 741? What size u joints did all of these come with too?

wrong... the yoke from a 741 will fit either a 742 or 489... the catch being if its a 10 or 27 spline... they made all three case in both styles...

My bad I knew my buddy had a 489 and said his was a 27 spline I think and told me I had a 10 spline with a 742. Glad I checked I will pull mine tomorrow and look.

A little clarification on yokes.

741 and 742 cases only came in 10 spline from the factory but there were at least 2 different U-joint sizes (and there might have been more as I seem to recall the 1330 or 1350 used on some of the older C-bodies). All A-bodies used the smaller 7260 U-joint

489 case yokes came in both 10 and 29 spline and 7260 and 7290 U-joint. From what I've seen 69 and early 70 489 cases used the 10 spline yoke and around 70-71 they went to the 29 spline.

It's possible a 489 case yoke could fit since some were 10 spline.

An easy way to tell what you have without disassembling it is the size of the retaining nut. The 10 spline yokes used a smaller nut that took a 1-1/8" socket while the 29 spline yoke uses a nut that takes a 1-1/4" socket

Just a quick note;

If your looking for a 29 spline 7290 yoke for your 8.75, a cheap place to look and get them are truck 9.25's at the UPull's! ...yes they are interchangeable

Most aftermarket performance gears are 10 spline.
If you plan on running it hard and often at the track with slicks, it may be worth considering an aftermarket billet steel yoke. OEM style can spread over time and hard use.

I knew there was a few yokes , fine and coarse for different cases, but only remember selling two different u joints 315g, small joint , 316 large joint precision numbers.

So which one would be stronger the 29 spline? I know with ratchets the fine tooth ratchet is actually stronger because it allows more teeth area to come in contact with each other. Is this the same rule on the yoke?

Yep. The 29 spline pinion and gear set are stronger not only due to more splines but also the O.D. of the pinion shaft at the splines is larger.
