Fellas,
Searched the site but couldn't find the answer to the following question:
Can I install an aftermarket hydraulic cam in a stock roller cam 318 ('87)? Of course, I'll be using hydraulic lifters rather than the rollers...

Would the roller lifters still work?

Thanks!
Patrick

Yes, you can put a flat tappet cam in a pre-magnum roller motor. As a matter of fact some came from the factory with flat tappet cams. I have a '88 360 that has the provisions for the roller but a flat tappet cam stock. I am going to do the opposite, I purchased a set of roller lifters, pushrods and spider from someone on this site and I am going to replace the flat tappet cam with a roller. The roller cams cost more but you can get by with a bigger cam and still have it streetable. Not to mention that there is less chance of the cam going flat. Comp Cams has a good selection of cams for stock roller motors.

In addition, the rollers should not be used on the Hyd. cam. The cam has tapper on the lobe so designed to get the Hyd. lifter to rotate for best/even wear.
The roller cam does not have a taper. IMO, I would look into a roller cam for your engine. It does cost more, but the cam would provided super long life, broader torque and more HP. Purchase springs to match. You'll be ahead of the game this way.
Get it custom ground from Comp or Crane to suite the need and specs of the engine for no more than a few pennies extra over the "Off the shelf cam."
