I measured the backlash on the 9.25 rear in my Ram and its got 16 thousands in play.
Is that enough to cause a decent amount of road noise?

There is 117,000 miles on the ring and pinion.

The spider gears in the carrier look pretty well worn and sloppy.
I'm hoping that's whats making the howl/wine sound.

The wear patter on the ring looks even across the whole face.
I'm not sure what excessive wear looks like.

Any help is greatly appreciated guys.
I'm trying to avoid dropping big bucks on fixing it.

Could be a bearing. Nevertheless, here's the specs for the 9.25" The good news is that these rears are plentiful at the boneyards.

Assembly Specifications:
# Cover Bolt Ft. Lbs. 15-25
# Pinion Brg. Preload In. Lbs 10-20
# Pinion Brg. Preload In. Lbs Used 10-15
# Ring Gear Backlash .005-.008
# Ring Gear Bolt to case Ft. Lbs. 115
# Side Brg. Caps Ft. Lbs. 100

Had the truck on the lift and it doesn't sound like wheel bearings.

Would being 9 thousands over spec cause howling?

very possible. Also a lack of fluid.

Pulled the plug on the cover before I drained it and the fluid was right at the bottom of the hole.

Loose spiders make a hell of a lot of racket(had a GM like that, a long time ago). Backlash in the R&P could also cause it but not as likely. Sounds like it's time to find another rearend or fix the one you have, before it locks up and/or spits it guts out and strands ya.

Thanks for the help guys. :thumbrig:

I ordered new spiders and a shim kit last night along with a manual on differential repair.
