Could any motor heads tell me where i can find a web site or book on how to convert a 1971 and 1975 ford 9 inch rears into a 1974 duster? Also where i can find out what the identification numbers stand for on these 9 inch rears? Thanks for the help!!!

SOME of them are pretty much a bolt in. I'm using a rare one (would not do it over again, because that particular disc brake setup is hard to get parts for) out of about a 78 Lincoln Versailles. I understand some of the Ford Fairmont/ Mercury Monarch in the same years came with a 9" but most were not disk, might even be a better deal. You could always convert to the Jeep disk setup.

Some of the older Mustangs would fit GOOD LUCK finding one. Bear in mind I believe there are THREE sizes of Ford third member rear axles. There's a smaller 8XX" size, the 9" and a larger one used on some large Lincolns. One way to tell the 8XX" one from the 9" is the lower bolt down "under" the pinion. An 8", you can stick a socket and extension right in there, on a 9" the pinion casting is "in the way" and there's a sort of notch. You MUST use a box/ open end wrench on that one bolt on a 9"

Some "stuff"

Other than that, do some Googling on narrowing rear axles. You have to be careful if you need to cut off and install new spring perches because you can warp the housing

Here's a pretty fair walkthrough. The BIG expense is the precision shaft you need to go through the axle to center things up. If you have a lathe or access to a friend's lathe, you can MAKE the bushings needed for the carrier bearing mounts and the axle bearing sockets

Already bought (2) 9" rears today. One is out of a 1971 pickup n the other is the more beefyer one out of a 1975 pickup. Thanks for the info.!!

Great question, my 73 Duster has a 9 in. and i have no idea what it is out of. I dont know what I will do if I need new drums

I assume it's an "older" conversion. Just measure the drum diameter and shoe width, and take one side, the shoes and hardware and drum, to the store. There's only so many people who make brakes that would be easily adapted to Mopars, and GM ain't one of em.

So Ford, Mopar, maybe Studebucket, AMC, most likely the first two.

I looked at one of the drums today and it said max 11.15 inches. Thanks for that website fordification. Just spent the last 3 hrs. On it. Great site for figuring out what i have. Thanks again!
