I bought an 87 pickup with a slant six and a bad 727. Looked all over and finally found an alleged good used one for $100. Started taking the old trans out this afternoon, and after getting the torque converter bolts out I realize it's a 904, not a 727. Am I gonna be in trouble in regard to kickdown linkage and driveshaft length tomorrow when I put the 727 in? It never dawned on me the original 727 could have been replaced at some point.... I never thought to look beyond checking the totally burnt fluid before I bought it...

Thanks guys....

Yep both, and since you didn't notice the 904/727 part, is the 727 even a slant bell trans?
Those are fairly rare.

What he said ^^^^ I've never personally heard of a car with a slant and a 727 . If you have one with a slant bell housing it's probably worth more than the rest of the car .

I'm pretty sure all slant six full size pickups and vans came with a 727....which makes sense given the weight they'd be pulling.....

Thanks for the input fellas.....I'll get it out and do a side by side comparison... the kickdown lever I can swap... the driveshaft is another story...

Everything should swap over fine except the driveshaft length and slip yoke. You will need the correct slip yoke for your 727 and shorten the driveshaft.

You sure? Every 318 auto truck I've had (5 of em) all had 904's. So I don't see why they would put a 727 behind a slant but a 904 behind a 318. And those were all mid 80s models. From about 83-89, if I recall right.

Well I just looked it up and the only slant six application the 727 was available for was the 225 RG and involved using a special adaptor plate so best of luck to ya . I would dump the boat anchor 727 and find another 904 or rebuild the one you have since your pulling it out anyway and the rebuild kit is reasonably priced given you don't need any race or HD parts . I am no mechanic and it only took me 2 hours to do my first 904 and it has all the race goodies in it .

This is some crazy stuff man....looking back, I had a 74 B200 shorty van with a slant and no power steering, but a 727. Then an 84 D150 with a slant, AC, power steering, and a 727, then an 85 D150 with a 318 and 727, and finally a 90 D150 with a 318 and whatever the OD trans is.......so I was 3 for 3 with 727's, none of which had an adapter plate of any kind. That said, I'm clearly wrong about all pickups and vans coming with a 727....I suppose the good news is I have a relative with a slant 904 that's willing to donate it to the cause, the only problem is it's been sitting in the garage for at least 25 years. Maybe it'll last long enough for me to order the rebuild kit and go at it as Cannucky suggested. I'd love to learn about the internals of these things.

If you can do a 904, and install all the race goodies, and it worked; then you are not "no mechanic", but rather; a damn good one.
I used the NSW youtube videos for the 727 and laid out a couple of sheets of plywood end to end so I could spread everything out in the exact order it came out , it was easy as F... , They show all the little tricks to disassemble and reassemble all the sub assemblies { damn three versions of the same word in one sentance -I am good } I also got encouragement and tips from Fishy68 , Trailbeast and Oldkimmer , Oldkimmer even looked it over when I stopped at his hometown which is @ 1000 miles from mine during my annual pilgrimage to Mecca aka Moparfest . TF transmissions are easy I stated here afterward that if anybody ever tried to tell me 1500-2000 to rebuild one I would punch him in the face . The longest part of the job was waiting for the piston seal to shrink in the freezer .

Oh and as for working well it's been 2/3s of the way cross Canada 3.5 times { popped a head gasket in Kindersly one year and ended up at the Saskatoon show } behind a 520hp stroker so yeah it works just fine .

I still wear the Canadian Mopar Fest hat you gave me, to all the car shows. :D
