Have 904 in my 65 Dart, using a BPE kickdown cable. My question is car runs and shifts fine when in drive and accelerating, when I shift manually from 1st to 2nd I'll jump on it and bring rpm up to 3500 to 4000 rpm and shift from1st to 2nd. There is a sluggishness where it kind of holds and finally does the slow shift to 2nd (what I'm saying is it's not a crisp firm shift! ). Would this be something in valve body or can I do some adjustment on the band adj bolt on tranny?

First, make sure your TV cable is full pull at WOT.

When's the last time you adjusted the bands? That may need to happen, drop the pan:

Behind the valve body, rear band, in charge of reverse, and 1-2 shift: If it's double wrap (three bands) 4 turns out from 6 in/lb snug, if it's single 2 1/2.

While your at it, 'that bolt on the side' adjust the front band, in charge of 2-3 shift and timing: 2 1/2 turns out from snug.

Enjoy!

Kick down is good, tranny rebuilt last winter and put back in this spring. Have about 2500 miles on it, I'm going to look at a adjustment see what that does. thanks

Part of the problem with manual shifting is that the TP is usually not at full when you shift causing some delay due to the pressures being lower.
Try stepping into it farther just as you shift it and see if that helps.

Blocking the accumulator helps with that as does opening up the oil holes in the separator plate in the valve body to allow the fluid to get to the clutches and bands faster.

Try stepping into it like I said, and see what the results are.

Of course a stage 2 shift kit will fix that also. :D
