I installed a B & M floor shifter in my 72 Dart for my 904. Instructions stated "pry shifter lever up off of the post with screw driver". Did that Hooked it all up everything seemed to work fine in static test (engine not running).

Of course as soon as I put some fluid in it it leaked. about a six inch puddle over nite.

Pulled the pan. Glad it leaked. There was a ball bearing in the pan. The one for the shifter detent. glad I didn't start it up.

Question:

1) Anybody have some experience with this?
2) How many bolts actually have to be removed to get the valve body out of the transmission?
3) How many ball bearings and springs will fly all over the shop when I drop the valve body?:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:
4) is the shift shaft missing a keeper to allow the detent ball to drop out when prying up on the shift lever?

The installation split the cork gasket which allowed the leak.

Any help before I have a pile of parts all over the floor??

The factory shop manual gives no clue as to how many bolts to remove to get the valve body out

Thanks,

Well.... I was kind of hoping that you guys would have some words of wisdom for me on this.

I got the valve body out. The biggest hang up was the "park rod" that is held on with an E clip. Looks like a really fun re-install.

The detent ball spring was bent. Everything is back in place. Ready to re-install.

Sorry I missed this one Fastmopar or I would have tried to help. I'm sure you know by now torqueflites are a much better valve body design than GM's that have check balls that fall out when you take it apart. If you haven't already got it together I'd put in a new shift shaft seal just to be safe. It's easy to change with the valve body out and good insurance that you don't have to take it apart again.

Usually the detent rod can be pulled out with little effort so you don't have to fight with the e-clip. Try pulling the rod out and see what happens.

Oh yeah. Anytime you have a question and don't get a response right away here feel free to PM me. I get notified right away so I will answer quickly. I've rebuilt numerous torqueflites (and GM's) over the last 28 yrs. so there's not much I haven't ran into.

should be 10 bolts to remove valve body

no ball bearing will fall out went the valve body is removed...you might have a spring from the accumulator fall out....

should be a small c or e clip that hold the shaft from coming up or out...

Thanks for the input on this. It helps to be reassured that springs and ball bearing won't be flying all over when you undo something.

Everthing is abck together and seems to be working the right way.
