i took a 1970 904 apart tonight to rebulild for my car and was checking the first set of clutches and it has a .250 gap between the snap ring and the clutch plate, the clutches all look really good shape, plates looked to be in good shape, in my transmission book it says it should be between .056 and .104 there are 4 clutches and the 2 nd set it is .038 in the book it says .032 and .058 so i should be good there. anybody know why this would be so wide. thanks for the help

take the clutch plates and measure there thickness...and measure the steels too

When I rebuilt my 904 I had help from another member here fishy68 and I used his specs of .012-.015 per clutch plate. I know how crazy the factory clearances have such a huge range. I know the snap rings can get to about .090 thickness I believe but also you can get a new pressure plate if the one you have is worn down. Im an expert by no means but the guys on here helped me out and now mine works like a champ. Maybe one of the trans. guys will chime in.

............Up 2 and includeing 1970, chrysler used thicker clutches and steels.......u can use a thicker snap ring as stated earlier, or maybe a thinner sr and 5 clutches........kim.....
