73 /6 duster with 904 doing some strange things.

The tranny shifts like it has a shift kit in it (hard and quick) but it's like shift points are all over the place.

Problems:
shifts too soon into 2nd even under full throttle.
shifts not soon enough into 3rd most of the time.
doesn't shift back into 2nd soon enough when coming up to a speed bump.

if I just ease onto the throttle it shifts normal 90% of the time. I "believe" I adjusted the kick down linkage correct, but now can't find the procedure.
It was something like.... damn A.D.D. I found it and I'll update this post when I correct the adjustment ... oops..

It says to loosen the lock nut and push the transmission lever "firmly" forward and tighten the nut.. seems too simple to be true. Is this correct. anyone have any way to verify it is set correctly?

OK so I adjusted the kickdown linkage per the instructions and it still shifts funny, a little better from 2nd into 3rd but still wont downshift if I mash the gas... so I'm thinking that the throttle is not opening all of the way when the pedal is fully depressed.. and the cable sleeve is adjusted all of the way back.. how do I adjust it further? bend the bracket? bend the gas pedal or something else. Oh it is a 73 225 with a carter bbd from a 78/9 volare (complete with linkage and brackets. )

How long has your trans. been acting like this? If is since you've owned it somebody may have installed a shift kit in it and maybe it was a poorly designed one. Most on the market today are poorly designed I've found. You can install one in one trans. and it works right then install the same kit in another and have either shift overlap problems or shift timing problems like you describe. The only kit I will ever use again is the Trans-Go kits. They are the most expensive ($50-60) and more work to install but they allways work right because Trans-go did their research on Torqueflites and found you just can't drill 2 oversize holes in a seperator plate and block the accumulator and expect them all to work consistantly.

The way I adjust the throttle pressure linkage is to hold the throttle wide open and adjust the transmission linkage as far back as it will go. That will raise the shift points to their highest and allow passing gear to work. Sometimes it takes 2 to do this correctly. One to hold the pedal down and the other under the hood doing the adjustment.

Thanks fishy, I too think there is a shift kit in it because it shifts HARD ( hard enough to spin the tires in 2nd around a wide corner. Only 2 other cars I've ever been in shifted like that, one was a 360 Roadrunner and the other was a 5.0 rustang, anyway, I guess I'm taking this a little fast and taking for granted that the trans isn't hosed. I haven't had the car on the road in over a year. I did change the fluid and filter before driving it.

I Also found that my carb was not WFO with the pedal to the floor. That has been fixed and it does downshift now but only when I push the pedal into the carpet so I do have some fine tuning to do.

Auto transmissions run by PFM. Pure F#*@(ing Majic as far as I'm concerned.
