I've read over the past threads and gotten an idea of what pans I like, but there is a cost difference. I'd like to find the crown automotive or RT offroad pan kit, but they are out of stock everywhere. My main question is if I use a deeper pan, how important is the filter extension?

I can get the dorman pan for 30 bucks in amazon, but it doesn't come with an extension. Or I can get the summit aluminum pan kit for 150, and it comes with everything including gaskets and filter extension

I already have a nice reusable transmission pan gasket. Both pans have pros and cons. Dorman - cheaper, black (like black better, it stays "clean") but its only the pan... Summitt is a much nicer pan, aluminum (supposed to be better for sealing), its a cleaner look but will get dirty as hell especially with my leaky *** engine/transmission
 
I've used that type of pan on my last 3 cars I've had. I've never had a problem or a leak, and I did use a filter extension. The filter is the intake, so it needs to be on the bottom to ensure it will pick up the fluid and not be sucking air if the fluid is sloshing around. I spent around $65 US for both. A great investment for your transmission, that extra fluid will help keep your transmission cooler.

@d1970 thanks! I'll grab the black one. Here is a filter extension on amazon for 23 bucks, so for 55ish bucks to buy both, I can't complain.

Dental Dart, I have very nice used factory Direct Connection chrome pan w/o extension. If interested.
 
I used one of those deep pans on my Swinger. Let me see if I can find the thread.
 
@VOETOM do you have a picture of it? Does it look like one of these? I like the placement of the drain plug best on these, but this one is just bare steel.

I like the idea of a little extra fluid. Along with that a filter extension is a good idea I think. The drain plug is a must have after having many on different transmissions I have owned. The permanent/silicone gasket is a must in my book. They seal well and you don't have to crank down on the pan and distort it to get them to seal.
 
Yes Dental, that is it except it is chrome. I'll take a photo of it later or Monday after I get it out and remove the dust from it.
 
The filter extension is not important. But I like it for three reasons. It helps to keep the pump primed during 4wding, and during hard accelleration. If you have a leak, it's an extra quart or so of safety margin. Con: it sucks up trash from the bottom of the pan just like the original. Aluminum pans will seal with a cheap cork gasket. This is important for the beginner pan installer.
 
@CudaFactHackJob beginner pan installer? What is that? Don't you just take the bolts, put them in the holes, and tighten? I'm now going to consider myself past the beginner stages but not a 100% professional... lol. It's been a couple of years... and i had help before. Really, the aluminum just intrigues me because it looks nice, and aluminum is supposed to seal better. It's just a plus that it is the exact one that Tony uses on his cars as well...

And "NO" you don't just put the bolts into the holes and tighten. If it was that easy and simple, then I wouldn't have mentioned it. The pan holes have to be knocked up before you reinstall it or the torque won't be evenly distributed. And a cork gasket can't take the torque that a Duraprene or Farpak(?) can; cork will split.
 
@CudaFactHackJob I didnt know that you were supposed to knock the bolt holes up before installing. I definitely didn’t do that with my original pan last time. I don't think I torqued the bolts either; I just tightened them by feel. No leaks from pan since it was done almost 2 years ago. I did get a fancy gasket from tony though, a reusable one (maybe thats why I have had no leaks). I keep leanning towards the aluminum pan because its the one I really want...
 
I just use cheapo $3.50 Duprene or Farpak gaskets. No leaks either. Never cork, cork/neoprene, neoprene, or rubber; they can't take the torque and will crack and split out; except on aluminum pans. That Summit pan is nice, but isn't the front of your car kinda low for a deep pan like that?
 
I'm not sure if my car is too low for a deep pan like the summit pan. I guess I will have to measure tonight when I get home. I have 15s in the front, and the fender covers just a bit of the top of the tire. The only thing I really drag ever currently is the big *** hooker headers; they are all torn up at the bottom. They were like that when I got them, and I haven't made them any better lol.

Dental , I am sorry for not getting the photo yet. We are using our great weather to build a shed for a pal so I'll try to do it tomorrow, if it rains.
 
just because your rims are 15s the other numbers on the tires have more to do with tire size. "I have 15" rims" doesn't tell us much.
 
Dental here it is. I will put a new drain plug in it; I did not like the way the other one was roughed up. You can see the scratches in the bottom from being on an unprotected jack (not my jack) and you can see how flat the pan rail is from the one side shot. Next series.

One thing the aluminum pan will do is dissipate heat.
I have the Summit Pan and a B&M pans.
The B&M was beefier but was not needed.
The aluminum pans are said to add to making the case more rigid.
The Summit was easier for me to do my sillyness with.
The B&M was almost free to me as was a raffle item.
I have pictures of them B&M while making it look good.
Remember you need longer bolts with the cast pans.
So get some if you go that route
 
@volaredon true on the rims... I have 245/60/15s rear and 215/65/15 fronts... But I got the metal pan, so I won't be hanging as low.
