Do you guys think a beefy, correctly modified 904 could hold up to the 6.1L Hemi in an A-body?

Reason I ask is I've been debating the 3G Hemi in my 68 Dart.

I guess I could find a small block 727 as well but I already have 2 904's to work with.

Are you staying stock with the 6.1 or going to mod it? From a torque standpoint you can about compair the 6.1 with a 440 they pull a strong flat torque curve. So I'd try the 904 and if it burns up go 727, my guess is you will have to have a decently built 727 to take it. One of my 392/6.1 customers with a ram truck toasted a few TCI 727's before he put about 3K in parts into one and that held up. But that was in a 5300 lb truck so a light A body won't be near as tough on the tranny. I'd expect you smoke the 904 though, particularly if you put a cam or heads on it.

Dave,

A properly built 904 can handle up to 600hp, my tranny guy here tells me it's no problem to build one like that. Figure your saving 25 more ponies to burn asphalt also.
