950 Ultra XP tuning on 500"

Keep us posted with how it goes!
Well the carburetor showed up today... and needless to say, it a piece of TRASH!! The accelerator pump levers don't even line up.. there is metal filings in the boosters, the whole carb is Chinese crap from I can tell. To say I am pissed off is an understatement. What joke! I'll be on the phone in the am.

The plastic ones suck even the steel ones aren't on the money but you can tweak them and get them perfectly centered.

Was also looking to order from Pro Systems. What they have to say? Actually am surprised at what they sent out.
Book Racing is within walking distance so will check them out.

Wow!!
That does look pretty shoddy.
I didn’t think they even made the plastic pump arms anymore.
No thanks.

I thought you were originally going to buy a Holley XP950?

I don’t really like the XP950 myself, so that wouldn’t have been my choice...... but that thing you have there would def be going back.

We’ve had good luck with the QFT Q series carbs.
We’ve had some Holley Race Brawlers work out pretty well also.

I posted this video before....... I thought it was a pretty good comparo:

Al that's a Pro Systems carb? WTF Patrick? He should know better.

I'll tell you...I've had him on the phone more than once and I was never really comfortable with him. Just can't put my finger on it. But I am quite the prick so it may just be me.

FWIW, for what you paid for that turd, you could call Thumprdart (Dominic) and he can do you a custom, one off, fully tested carb that will work.

If you want Dom's number you can PM me for it.

I'll PM you. Sending it back for a full refund. Patrick and I exchanged emails and he has offered to refund my purchase. Good enough for me.

That’s scary ! I have a Pro Systems on my 408 but have only idled it so far ... I hope that is a fluke ! Hard to believe it passed inspection much less the flow test.

Couldn't agree more

Sometimes mistakes are made, but not on mine. I've had Pro-Systems build me 4500 and 4150 carburetors and they have been really good carburetors. I'm sorry you had a bad experience. Should I need another carburetor, I wouldn't hesitate to order from them again.

Forget the flow test........ it shouldn’t have gotten any farther along than a visual inspection...... which it should have failed miserably.

Those are serious loads of shavings stuck in behind the booster flange.

Speed secret perhaps?

Possibly that employees first and last day...
Crap happens.
I researched Pro Systems quite a bit and found nothing but good reviews.

You and I both. I have found Patrick to be a very decent person to talk to to. But in the end it's a fair chunk of change... And like all people, we want what we pay for.

Damn straight.

I’ve dynoed probably 8 motors with Pro Systems carbs.

One was quite good, one was pretty good......... one had some weird issues where it would die after you ended a pull(same problem in the car on the track. Carb was sent back to PS for a tweak....... still did the same thing when it was returned), on one the fuel curve was all over the map and it didn’t make very good power(got sent back at Patrick’s request and replaced with a different carb that was “fine”, but nothing special).
The others were no better or worse than another unmodified carb.

Too bad you didn't have the time to pin the car and see what exactly everything was drilled to. I remember one discussion I had with Pat about emulsion. He wanted way more than I thought I would need. He said it was because it was a stick on a two step.

I couldn't get him to tell me how that makes a difference. I thought that would be important to know, so if a tuning change needed to be made, I'd have some idea what his thought process was. We never got there though.

Several years ago I used to do quite a bit of dyno work with some guys running 358 Dirt Mods.
Some of the carbs those guys would show up with were really bad. Several were done by one of a few different self proclaimed carb gurus.
They were usually just totally out to lunch...... and often had issues that couldn’t be tuned out.
A few I tested had some variation of a spray bar type of booster.

But I think the worst ones were when the Demon line was first offered by BG.
Some of those things would literally hardly even run as they came ootb.
You’d know right off the bat....... it needed more than jets and air bleeds.
The owners would have been way ahead just pulling the motor off the dyno right there, selling the carb at a loss, and buying a new one from one of the successful carb suppliers for the series.
But...... that suggestion was never followed, so you’d spend all day chasing the tune around........ and in the end you’d have something that was mediocre at best.
If it was someone who was fairly serious about winning........ and this would be the same scenario if the carb was bought from the unknown-carb-builder, which would also end up making underwhelming power....... they’d run it a few weeks, and after they got tired having their *** handed to them...... they’d buy the “good” carb.
In the end, those guys would end up spending well over twice what it would have cost to just buy the good carb in the first place.

That’s the long version of...... there’s a lot of junk out there.

Wow sorry about your experience, everything I’ve seen and heard from them has been good, atleast you can get your money back and move on!

thumper time!

Ok , you guys are second guessing a race carb on the street? Cocksucker every one of you, it's a drag race carb do you not know the difference. It's NOT a street carburetor......period DUH

I've dynoed it my e-85 against a Holley race 9380. For the stupid In the crowd follow the waves ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the rest there was a bump of 30hp for the e ⁸⁵ the rest I don't care.

Albeit crudely put .... he has a point !
Hammer down performance has little to do with drive-ability . That’s why Toilets work .

Is it just me, or are those boosters not even installed all the way? They are not even flush against the carburetor body. Dammit man.
