Hi guys, got a problem with my 4-speed trans. It's a 1965 833 with ball and trunion tail shaft that i installed in my 66 cuda. When the car is cold the trans will shift into 1st gear with no problem, when everything gets warmed up trying to shift into 1st gear feels spongy. Most of the time it won't go into 1st after warming up, sometimes it will but will kick right out unless you hold the shifter forward but it never feels like a positive shift after it's warm, rubbery/spongy is the best i can describe it. I'm getting the car out of storage in a week or so and will be putting up on blocks for some general maintenance. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Note: I'm running a diaphram clutch and yes i did disconnect the overcenter spring. Thanks

could be something as simple as a linkage rod adjustment. get it up on a hoist and check the obvious first before looking into the trans.

Try pulling it into 2nd gear before trying for 1st..

Check your shifter rod adjustments, sounds like it's a bit off..

hope it helps

I'll double check shift rod adjustment. I've tried going from all gears back into 1st. still exhibits same problem. I purchased all new shift rods, washers, spring clips and hurst shifter when i installed the trans and adjusted with the rod in the shifter. If you think a rod is out of adjustment, which one would you think it is? Thanks for all your help.

If you have stop screws in your new hurst shifter try backing off a 1/4 or 1/2 turn after the linkage is re-adjusted. If it still throws out of gear its likely a syncro problem.
