The pan rail has markings. How can I decode these to find out if I have a A-904 or A-999? I found this transmission in the trunk of a '72 Slant Six Duster I bought. The tranny is a small block A-904 or A-999. Just how can I tell without taking it apart?

IIRC the A-999 are the lock-up version of the A-904.......so I believe you have a 904.

The tranny decodes like this:
PP=new process plant
PK=Kokomo plant
2892080=1969 318 standard duty 904 tranny
Z=Internal plant code
2672=WED nov 20 1969
4007=4007 built tranny,sequence number

I just had a 999 rebuilt for my project, it was not a lock-up nor did it have the 2:74 low gear. it did have the extra clutch disc.

The 904 in my 72 Swinger (318, a/c, ps, pdb) had the five disk front drum, but the standard low gearset. I will probably use this tranny as a core for my 65.
