I have an iron case O/D A833 from a truck (B body) and an aluminum case O/D A833 from an A Body.

I was thinking about using best pieces from both and making one.

Before I tear into them...

Question is: Are the guts the interchangeable? Any differences in gears, etc.?

Are the aluminum cases really that prone to fail? I'll be running the 4 speed behind a slant six...currently with a 2.76 rear.

Thanks

I seem to remember that the gear ratios were different between the various body styles, probably based on weight/power ratio.

Just checked my 1968 factory service manual...

Gear ratios for 833...

1st...2.66
2nd...1.91
3rd...1.39
4th...1.00
Reverse...2.58

There is no mention of different 833 gear ratios in 1968 for various vehicles.

Most internals are the same. Differences seem to be year related. I feel that the newer the trans, the shift arms and lockouts got weaker and cheesier. If you are putting it in an "A" body, I'd just use the Aluminum case behind a /six. I'd put new gaskets and seals in it and run 90 wt gear oil if your budget allows. Passon Performance Transmissions can bush the aluminum case to beef it up if your is , or becomes worn.

Alright, The truck transmission came out of a '79 Slant six, and the A body I think a '77 slant six. I've heard that people recommend you use a cast iron case due to the fact of the aluminum case possibly wearing out.

The outputshaft will be different because of the length difference but I believe the main case guts are the same.

You should be able to use the iron main case with the aluminum case guts. Some '75 a-body 833OD's have iron cases. I had one that is now in my son's car.

I figured the guts were probably the same minus the output shaft...I guess its a good time to tear these things down and see what I got to get into.
