A body Front speaker location?

I have been into car stereo since the 70's and have never heard of the speakers you're referring to. Do you have any pictures of them? How good do they sound, especially if they've been sitting on a shelf in somebodies garage for 30 + years?
 
I do remember the old Jensen separates with the pod that contained a mid-range and a tweeter. If you had those, a pair of Triaxials and a Pioneer Supertuner, you were really rockin 30 years ago.

I used Boston Acoustics in the back and kick panels, and some MB Quart 3 1/2s in the plate referenced above. I still haven't picked out an amp yet, but will probably go with something about 60 watts per four channels.
 
This is what I have done. If my car was all original and the panels were in top notch shape, I would not cut the them. I did have to cut the doors a little.
I have a plate and 6 1/2" mid-woofer. The grills are removable so I can roll down the windows. I have Polk MOMO 6x9's in the back and a 12" sub in the trunk. All powered by a 4 channel ADS amp and Profile mono amp.

Brian every car I had in my youth had to have a set of these and to be honest all my friends were the same way. These were small speakers about 2 1/2x4 by1 1/2 high and could be mounted in the corners of the dash which would reflect the sound off the windshield or up high on the windshield facing the driver.. They had a volume control on them as well so you could fill in the front of the car as much as needed. I keep my eye out for them now and pick them up when I can.

No way! Mine are held on with power hook(kinda like velcro on steroids).
I wanted to go with kick panels, but I really didn't like the way they looked. Didn't the 70 to 72 Duster's have a kick panel speaker option?
 
before any kick panels were available i made my own. even if they were available then, i wouldnt have bought them. thos things are butt. but a good option if you dont want to modify anything. before i made mine i put a good 4x10 in the dash. its sounded like crap. that was what mad eme do the kicks. people say the 2 3.5"s are way better than the 4x10 but i have my doubts they are so close to each other. anyway i made my kick panels out of glass il lhve to dig up some pics. i thought of offering them for sale but then those ugly *** black plastic jobs came out. and there was no way peopel would pay what i would want to make them. i put 6.5" alpine components. i think they are type R. they sound so freaking good. i have a JL 75x4 amp with JL 6/9s i nthe rear deck, they used to sound good. now to me they sound like crap compared to the components. to do it all over again, id go with something a little smaller. 5.25" or what ever the next size down in components. one of these days ill have to get an ipod and set that up in the dart. i had sirrius but got fed up with it.
 
LOL I thought you might remember them. One of the things I enjoyed most was doing my own stereo's, and those Pioneer tune ups were a must. Mind you that was when Jensen was a good brand and those green Cricket speakers were all the rage.

I`ve been looking for an old Pioneer Super Tuner (the large round dial type) on Ebay lately and haven`t found a thing. I`d like to find a Super Tuner and a pair of old Jensen tri-axials to put in my Dart as a nostalgic piece. Finding either one in decent shape will not be easy.
 
I made a bracket similar to 74 sport's bracket, sorry I don't have pics. My bracket is roughly the same dimensions as the origional speakers with a 1/2" flange on the long sides for rigidity.

Those aren't bad at all. I had thought about building a set. I looked at all kinds of information on the net about making kick panel pods. I just didn't want to go through the aggravation. Looks real good.
 
you have to hear them, they sound incredible. on mine the fresh air vents open just like with factory kick panels. not like the ebay plastic jobs. with oval speaker. one thing, i will have to relocate the manual washer pump and hi beam switch because the 6.5"s are so damn big. they look really good with paint ill see if i have a pic. i would like to just go with some sort of electric washer pump. really how often do i use it though. when i get back into it i am going to make a similar style enclosure for the rear package tray that will tilt the speakers foward as opposed to the sound bouncing off the rear glass. pretty sure the speakers will like an enclosure more than just having the open trunk behind them. it was fairly straight foward but it is a lot of work and pretty messy. dont even think of doing it in your car with a carpet you like. i am not a car audio guy but i do like tunes. 6x9s i nthe rear tray really werent doing it for me anymore os i researched it liek anything else and talked to the owner of a local shop that is pretty resonable. he gave me alot of good inf so i bought from him. i figured i got hosed but really his prices were pretty good too. i just had expensive taste. thinking about it now, i might make that rear tray and put these 6.5"s in it and get some 5.25"s and make up a set of new kick panels.
 
Looks good james, i have contemplated doing the same but find some more shallow mount 5.25" speakers so as not to have to relocate the window washer and the high beam switch.

back to the dash mount twin 3.5s though, would you have to remove the dash with a car (68 dart) fitted with am radio and aircon? i had a play the other day and it doesnt look like an easy job to get the old out and the new in.

I will post a pic up later of what i have done with the rear parcel shelf.
 
For optimum sound staging and quality, the kick panels are the best location to put speakers. The goal is to have the best sound quality up front. The rear is just for ambient sound and bass anyways.
 
Heres some before vinyl pics, easy really, got some 9mm mdf, cut out the shape of the shelf, cut holes for the speakers, I mounted my speakers underneath rather than on top but it wouldnt matter, the mopar logo is just foam glued onto the mdf and vinyled over, and used speaker grill cloth for above the speakers.

It replaces something like this old 4"x10" single-cone speaker bracket. You can install dual 3-1/2" speakers of your choice, and it mounts in the original location without any modifications.

do those go in the dash? like in the top where the single speaker is?
 
Yes, the plate mounts from the bottom and replaces the original 4x10 speaker.
 
The third picture shows an original 4"x10" speaker and how it is mounted under the dash grill. The other two pictures show how you can replace it with two speakers using my bracket. You can see how it mounts in the same location using the original studs.
