Does anyone make a stock A body gas tank with a welded in sump and an AN hook up ready to bolt in?
I don’t want to put in a cell as the trunk and under side of the body is painted already and 8 don’t want to cut up the truck floor.
Thanks all!

Wally.

If it's for an early A body , I have one I am replacing with a fuel cell.
-10 return plumbed in the front and two 1/2 " NPT outlets on the sump
message me if this works for you.......it will be going cheap.

This is a smaller sump for like an import vehicle, bought off eBay. Fairly inexpensive as I recall. Has 1/2" NPT fittings. I used a stock 1/2" fuel pickup for my return line.

If you do it yourself ............ and I paid to have the first one done many moons ago , but have done three since...........three cycles at the coin op car wash.
Soap and rinse. That will ensure that there are no left over vapors to ignite.
It might be over kill , but I have never had any drama when cutting or welding on a tank , and that is just how Daddy likes it.
Once you figure out where you want to locate the sump , mark the area and use a hole saw.
Punch holes through the tank where you want fuel to fill the sump from , and create a sort of a baffle to keep the sump full.
I used a 1" hole saw and five holes , leaving a metal wall at the front of the sump to prevent all the fuel from leaving the sump under braking.
Again , probably overkill , but it sure works on paper. lol
And the shape of the early A body tank wants to keep the lowest part of the tank full..........this isn't the rear of the tank.
It isn't that tough to do and it isn't that expensive either.
I paid the guy who did my first one 40.00 ............1980 dollars , so it will be higher today.
But if you can't weld , figure on around 100.00 an hour shop time for any credible fab shop to do it for you.

I like the sump idea.
I was replacing my tank so I went with tanks inc tank and an internal pump with an fittings.

Don't let their paranoia stop you.
It's not the tank........it's the fumes that you have to deal with.
Unless it is rust they are worried about , there is no valid reason not to if the proper prep is done.

I did a dukes of hazard thing in a 1963 sport fury one time , we pulled the tank outside a gas station in the driveway with tools loaned us by the attendant. Took it to the welder that did my dads farm equip. welding, he was asleep in a chair in his overalls at 2 in the morning. He washed the inside of the tank with carbon tetrachloride and welded it up , no problem. Fast forward yrs. later, I was building a tank for a fully tubbed hemi belevedere, out of an old s10 tank, couldn`t get carbon tet by that time thanks to epa, washed it w. water / soap and everything we could think of, left it full of water , and it still blurped when I put the flame to it. The tanks had very high lead content back then, and could be soldered instead of welding. I have then since inquired about getting a sump put in, and no welder wants to do it !
LOOK INTO DEISEL ADD ON SUMPS IF U NEED TO GO THAT ROUTE.

I run holley hydra mat. Used to have to run over 5/8ths of a tank. Now I can run 2 gallons with no issues.

I think we're talking apples to rutabagas here.
A hydra mat works to keep the liquid level around the pick up when a horizontal pick up is used.........in tank pumps like this a lot.
A sump is preferred with an external electric pump unless it uses a diaphragm.
Rotary vane pumps like to push fuel.
A typical drag racing arrangement has a sump , even with fuel cells , and then a filter and pump located as close to the tank is available.
Even when a small electric is used to supply fuel to a mechanical pump , the electric does the most good when it is pushing the liquid , rather than relying on suction to draw it.
Hydra mats work to keep fuel surrounding a pick up pretty well based on what I have read , but I think would not have the same effect as a sump for supplying a pick up like the surge that good old fashioned acceleration provides with a sump.

Wally.

A 15 gallon fuel cell does fit the spare tire tub and opens up space behind the diff.

Now there’s an idea!?!
Anyone ever done this?
Pics maybe?

Thanks Rocket!

I installed one on my b body. It sure looked great and all. I did have a problem with it rusting inside of the tank though. After finding rust in my filter I pulled the tank and shone a light in, could see rust on the welded sump floor. The only fuel it ever had in it was renegade right out of the barrel too.

looks like you are using a brand new fuel tank also..

Look for "mini fuel tank sump" on eBay. They are about $25.00 "mtltek" is the name of the vendor. And yes I bought a new tank for mine. Had a buddy weld it. There is another pic in my build thread.
