A stroker 408 build?

Hey all, Well.... While making a trip to the machine shop to have my rear axle studs put in.... I start talking to the machinist/owner.. Turns out to be a mopar guy. :grin: We start talking and he tells me he can make a stroker 408 out of my 360 for $3K... $2200 for the rotating assembly and about $700 for the machine work.

Is this an average price?

What has to be done to make a stroker 408? Is it a strong performer? I'll be using the car for bracket racing and street driven to local car shows.

What Carb, intake, cam works for this setup? It would be put in a 73 Duster, 727 reverse pattern 4200 converter, 4.11 rear.

Should I do this eventually for the money? Or stay with the 360?

Get yourself a " How to build big inch Mopar small blocks" book. I found a copy on e-bay, # 170029023047. It can answer a lot of questions you may have. There is also info on stroker kits you can buy from many speed shops. There isn't a lot of machine work needed unless uou go crazy with the heads and a set of Magnum heads work great on a stroker combo. toolmanmike

Other than expense, there is little reason not to build a 408. ...Oh, and you traction will go to hell. (in a cloud of smoke)

What year is the block? The $2200 includes balancing, right? What crank will he be using? How much power do you want out of this Duster?

I bought the same book 2 weeks ago at Barnes and Noble. I'm only into the 2nd chapter but its some pretty good reading. Stroker crate crates run upwards of $3700 and up. Is he selling you a forged or cast rotating assembly?
 
The first thing you do when the work starts is use a hone plate up top the block to keep the cylinder bore straight.
The actual cost of decking the block and boreing isn't a whole lot. If he does this and checks out everything else, your in.
A rotating assembly sells around that priced and should be balanced allready.
The ony extra work involved in a stroker build is a minor clearanceing of the cranks extra throw. The rods need to be clearanced actually. It is easy. For a guy that builds engines as a living, it's a snap.

I think the price looks good.

Build depending, CFM wise, it could be as little as a 650 to as big as 850.
Any intake except a iron stocker and performer would do. Unless your trying to go into F.A.S.T. class racing.
Larger CID engines swallow up large cams and act more docile on them. A good example would be a 318 and a MoPar 292 purple cam sounds radical in idle and a power band starting @ 3500. The stroker will idle much better and power will start much lower.
Also, the bennifit of a stroker is in it's shear torque making abilty with the peak power coming in at sane RPM levels. No need to spin the engine to the moon. Your more likely to peak before 6000 even with a decent sized cam.
