I'm sure this must be somewhere in the forum already but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. As far as the A230 3-speed transmission goes, what if any differences are there between the A230, PP230 and NP230. The one that came in my 1971 Demon is a PP230 with a manufacture date of August 19, 1969.

Second, where can I get internal parts for the A230? The guy I bought the Demon from had 3 new synchros in a bag to put into the transmission because it shifted kind of hard into 2nd gear. I took the tranny apart to replace the synchros and to check everything else and found that the two thrust washers on the countershaft really need to be replaced. I've done multiple internet searches for A230 parts and I can't even find gaskets for the tail or shift fork cover. I'm not afraid to use the Ultra Gray Permatex on those surfaces so not having gaskets isn't a show stopper. Thanks

I would call Brewers Transmission. They are closed today but open tomorrow.

Yes, call Brewers to check. He may save used ones from a tear down. BUT the A230 doesn't get much respect and hence stocking rebuild parts can get neglected. I do save used tear down parts from the 230, and should have them. I looked in my NP parts book, and surprisingly there isn't a PN for that item. I looked to give you a number to chase. Gaskets, yes also an issue.
Shifty
Update: PN is 3410162 (21-15-33)

Although not related to your questions, I have to say that's the dang cleanest transmission ID pad I've ever seen on ANY transmission. Usually, the numbers are crooked and or stamped on top of each other.

Odd also with a 69 stamp, 9B..., and a Aug build date 2944. Should be 0B... !

I’ll check these two places , their web sites don’t look like they have much for the A230.

I did a little comparison. The front spacer should allow using an 833 thrust spacer. The rear does need a smaller diameter on the 230 for clearance.

Chignikred, when you say front and rear, are you referring to the front as the countershaft and the rear as the reverse idler shaft? The countershaft is 15/16” diameter and the reverse idler is 3/4” diameter. I’m not sure if there are different thicknesses for these thrust washers?

I don't have any new thrust washers for the A230, but I can supply a couple good used ones.

Okay, I have a couple Thrust washers coming from Brewer's Performance. Thanks Dan.
It would still be nice to see more support for the A230 3-speeds out there in the Mopar world, but I'm grateful for whatever help I can get.

From the looks of that one thrust washer, I'd be checking over the case pretty closely, and resetting the endplay as may likely be required. Your case may need repairs to prevent that washer from spinning again.

BTW
the A833 overdrive, is a 3plus1, with similar ratios to the Slanty A230 ..... and it has all the A833 style guts, except there are two available mainshafts, the V-8 which uses the 727 yoke, and the slanty, which uses the 904 yoke..
And best of all, you can usually score them cheap. But it will require a different shifter, which might cost more than the box, lol..
The od box ratios are;
3.09-1.67-1.00-.73od
To get Second gear where you want it usually requires 3.91s in the back, which is the equivalent then, of 2.85 in overdrive, which is awesome!. The starter gear with 3.91s is an outrageous 12.08, so expect to have to install some traction aid(s), lol
If your engine has gobs of low-rpm torque, like a hi-compression360, you can use less than a 3.91 rear gear, to get even less cruise rpm..

There are two A230 ratio sets, that I know of;
2.55-1.49-1.00, splits of .584-.671; and
3.08-1.70-1.00, splits of .552-.588; Check out all the splits.
I think the 2.55 was for V8s and the slanty got the other one, but don't quote me, lol.

follow up. Glad Dan came through. I was writing about the countershaft washers, which was the subject at hand.
Plus the damage on your washers is on the countershaft side, not the case side. They were doing the job they were meant to do.

I had a 318-3spd Duster with the low 3.08 first gear between the bucket seats and 3.21’s out back. *I think* it was a ‘73. Also having a moon roof and fold down rear seat. It was pretty peppy off the line for a bone stock 318.

I have an original shifter for suck and it is cheap enough. Message me if in need.

Hyup; 3.08 x 3.21= 9.89 right in the thick of "pretty Peppy".
I think 73 was the last year for lightweight Dusters.
I had a 73 Duster as well, but an auto. When it comes to short-wb cars I have had at least one of nearly every year from 65 to 80, except years 75 and 76.... it took me a while to warm up to those sideways T-bars.

The 'close' ratio came in the 340 and 383 applications, aka HP cars. A, B and E.
I have a close ratio gear set available to sell.
Shifty, because I don't clash and I'm in sync !
