have not been active in years but due to life changes, I am getting ready to finally work on my cars.
Can you run a early gearset, lets say 69, in a overdrive a body maincase?
Has any one done or tried this?

Thanks in advance

Well, yes. Since plenty of people do it the other way around, why not?

Yes you can do that, however, the OD gear set uses a main shaft with a smaller diameter where the gears reside. You cannot put non-OD gears on the OD main shaft because the inside diameter is too large, so the main shaft has to match the gear set. Also, the OD case has the larger front bearing so if you order a rebuild kit make sure you get the larger bearing. There is an exception to the lack of interchange: the 22-tooth input gear from the 3.09 ratio 1st gear non-OD trans is the same as the 22-tooth OD version (this is true for the non-high helix OD gear set only, the high helix version uses a 24-tooth input shaft/gear).

I did it no problem. But I had the front cluster pin hole bushed for a light press fit, and got rid of the floating pin/expansion plug seal.
Later, I replaced that modified case with a nice meaty Passon case.

Most O/D main cases use the 308 input bearing and the countershaft "floats" or has slop in it and is shorter. I go the other way so I can use the 307 input bearing and use whatever bellhousing I want. The non "floating" countershaft also tightens up your trans.

I was planing on putting a Hemi internals from a crash box into an all aluminum OD case with Aluminum tail shaft and side cover. I found out that some of the OD cases I have are different at the reverse detent and switch. I have one that will work. I called Dan at Brewers and he said don't do it. Just use the hemi case, Install the tail shaft and main shaft from the 23 spline. I am taking Dans advise. he said it will be much stronger for big Horse power.

On all that being said, I can understand the stock OD case being weaker than the iron case.
Will it be weak or just weaker. Would it be as strong as a cheby ST10?
with the countershaft float issues corrected of course.
was thinking about this for a street small block in a 63 dart.
probably 400Hp with 3:91 ratio.
Thank you for your input

I too have a 833 standard 4 speed and its for e/b body. I not only want to make it for A body tail on it ( I have a bell housing for my slant already. Id like to know if I can make this a overdrive ? or should I just sell this entire thing and buy a 833od ready to go from brewers ? they are over 3k. And I have this amazing trans here already.

I have a A body overdrive if you are interested.
PM sent to you

A Bodies use the smaller 307 input bearing on all the bellhousings except the overdrive ones. To switch to an A Body 833 you need to swap the mainshaft and tailhousing. The main housing determines the front bearing. What do you have now?
