Curious where most aftermarket tachometers are being mounted in our cars. Mine is a Barracuda. Some photos of yours would be great.

Mine is on the steering column.

I had it mounted to the A pillar until I noticed it had put an indent in my dash pad. Took a while for that to come out.

The Duster has a 1978 vintage Sun Super Tach II on the column, I have an Auto Meter Sport-Comp Tach with a Shift Light that can be remotely mounted that I used back in my Drag Racing days, I plan on mounting the Tach under the dash about where the Ash Tray is and then mount the Shift Light on the Column where the Sun Tach is now.

I'm about to run a tachometer in the same way you did yours off the column. Where did you run all your wires?

I mounted mine under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Most tachometers have a mounting kit you can use for this, just drill two holes. Here is a photo of mine.

Mine is mounted down low as you can see on the right.
Shift light has been installed now and is on the left side of the column behind the turn signal lever.

On a whim and a clearance sale I bought this Sun (lol, it's as big as the sun) to mount on the column. Too big and think I'm just going to put the tach drive SW back on. The SW just hung from it's bracket between the dash and top of the cluster above the column. No holes in the dash pad.

Not the greatest picture, but here is where I mounted mine. I ran the wires through where the steering column goes through the lower dash piece. I used short self tapping screws to mount the base for the tach. This won't work if you have a column shift auto though.

If its not near eye-level, when looking through the windshield, straight ahead,IMO you may as well leave it in the box it came in.
When I'm flying down the track, I'm looking where I want to be. If I have to look away to see the needle at 90Mph, the car is pretty much out of control. Right? 90 mph is 132 feet per second. Just a glance away from the road, and a refocus to 2 or 3 ft, then another refocus as your eyes return to the track and you may have travelled 60 ft or more. But suppose you are still young and can pull this off in a quarter of a second. Thats still 33ft.
To that end, I fabbed up a simple flat-aluminum bracket that clamps onto the dashpad. Then I mounted my little 8G-270plus* tack onto that. When I go to the track, I slide the whole thing in front of where I'm looking. Later I move it off to the passenger side a ways.
My little street-tack has a built-in shift-lite and a pointer. I set the pointer to 6G to confuse the enemy, and the lite to 6800. I also have a timing module with a rev-limiter, that I set to 7200, in case I miss a shift. No its not an MSD chip/pill type, but it's rather moot, cuz I dont miss-shift anymore.'Course I dont track it anymore either, lol
Well, I also don't care for my Speedo being obscured, cuz speeding-tickets here, carry demerits, which increase registration/insurance premiums as well. And while those Monster tacks have their place, I don't care for them either, in a street car.
Course you're free to mount your tach where ever, but every time I see a monster 10G tach mounted on the column,it cracks me up.................and to see a wee bity tach console-mounted is seriously laughable.
Please don't hate me. It's just an opinion.

Mine is just a cruiser... Perhaps someday if I can build it to be more of a track car I'll move it and most likely get a bigger tach. For now the car at most goes 65 mph and maybe sees 2500 rpm. :D
