AJ's Opinion; what size SBM do I need

-
Find where I said a 318 is worth PURSUING. Didn't say that. I wouldn't run out and buy a 360 if I already HAD a 318. That 318 would get built. As for bore size, sure, more is good. Not necessarily better for "everything" under the sun, but more is good. I obviously don't care much for bore size since the bore in my engine is 3.445".
If all I had was a 318 block, I'd build ***** nasty.
Chances on casting would determine if I could bore it 4"+ 'like I already have' or get a 3.58 crank or easier for pistons..a 4" crank and 1.94/1.55 valves for those little heads..eh better yet, some promax heads.
Stud the bottom end to help with those wimpy caps.. reuse the late rods or buy some rods, solid roller like anything else.
There is no more limitation with a 318 than there is with anything else you'd build.
Imo It's a power limitation related more to main web/cap strength more than size.

350/361 B engines are like the 273…. :D

Naw......

You want to know what's funny??? When Vanilla Gorilla was here with his 318 Duster, 100% street driven car (his wife even took it to the store to buy food), offering wagers to grudge race all your guyz'z BB's, Strokers, etc that was a street car in street form, nobody stepped up and took his money :D And for the record, it was a forged 318 crank that mother mopar made, with W2 heads, and a shot of NOS. Nobody needed any money??? NOBODY ?????

318 C.I. on NOS taking on a beloved LS on NOS, and taking money from the LS :D

.
The next batter up was the 413 and it was no slouch. And the bore size was smaller than a 383.

To my knowledge, the 413 MAX WEDGE had the highest compression of any production engine ever made at 13.5:1. They were no slouch indeed.

I'm not buying that the 383 is to the Big Blocks what the 318 is to the small blocks.
Back in the fifties or sixties you could get a 383 with two four barrels on it. And I have yet to see a roadrunner with a two barrel from the factory. I know you could get a 383 2 Barrel in the charger but I believe you can get a 318 in a charger also. I'm talking early 70s late sixties.
383 is no dog or boat anchor.
I would say the 350 big block or the 361 would be comprable to the 318 in status.
The only two four barrel 383 was the 343hp in the 62 plymouth, and maybe the dodge. There is some discussion whether it was factory available, or a dealer installed option only. 62 wagons with the 343 horse 383, were badass, stock eliminator record holders for years!

My friend has dual 4 barrel 383 62 Plymouth that he runs in stock eliminator
It is either in D or E stock

New Game: Every time AJ says “I’m not a 318 hater” he has to take a drink. Every time he says “Build a 360” we have to take one.

I don't need a reason to get smashed

Ok you poked the bear ........ again
My advice as to cubes is based on the old adage that for performance, you need a 10 cubes per 100 pounds so a 3200 pound car and driver needs a 318 minimum. Since 1970, I have found this to be pretty good advice.
3200 loaded means about 3000 for the car only. Good luck with that.
Sure you can make horsepower with a 318 just by spinning it. But what you can't do is get bottom end out of it, with the big cam in it.
And street performance is all about bottom end. With the typical 3.23s she don't come alive until AFTER 30 mph! unless by some miracle you can get both tires spinning; and as we all know, spinning ain't winning..
So then you gotta bandaid the combo with stall and gears, to get some low-speed performance back .
So now not only do you have this pipey 318, but you also had to spend cash for the stall and gears and now you are wearing out your iconic318 on the freeway, not to mention wearing earplugs.

OK, granted you can engineer a 318 to get a modest amount of bottom end to go with that crazy cam. No argument. But the vast majority of all guys who come to FABO with 318 power on their minds, want nothing to do with putting proper pistons in their slouchy smoggerteens. They just want to bolt stuff on, to make a fun streeter; which is NOT ENGINEERING. And telling them to put a 268 cam or bigger , into their smoggerteens with no other changes, is just very bad advice. And probably 7 out of 10 guys are gonna say just that.

So if you actually thought about it, you might figure out that I actually am watching out for 318 owners. Not just in their pocketbooks, but also as to their expectations.

Please notice I never said a word about any other engine than the 318.

So where do you stand on these little 2.7 v6s in a full size truck? Lol before you answer remember they make over 300 hp. I've never been sold on bigger is better I've seen some extremely impressive 318s 273s 289s 302s etc its all how you build them. I love my 360 but I also would never turn down a 318. I have one on my to do list

Tall deck 383 or low deck 383 if we're going to mix the two of them their performance option....and relating to them as the 318 of Big Blocks then we can compare the poly 318 to the tall deck with its two 4 barrels and then the LA 318 for a single four-barrel like the ld 383. That's how I see it.

LOL! Hey AJ - Don’t take it personal, just having some fun. You know we love you for all your sound advice, and you love us too, for all our daft questions!

But you also trashed the 318 enough.

Please notice I never said a word about any other engine than the 318.

OK! Who drinks? AJ or us?

Yeah come one come all. Dang this exclusion. lol
