I'm building up my 71 valiant drag car. Its just a weekend for fun project. Low budget. Well I was talking to my good buddy who happens to be 73 years old. He is an old drag racer with a whole barn full of trophy's. He raced a 66 dodge 1/2 ton pickup. He was telling me about the motor, he took a 413 and bored it to 426. Balanced it used the same grind cam that cam in a 440 six pack. Well basically he used parts that all came in stock mopars. By the way he ran a consistent 13.00 with a 3.23 gear daily driven truck.
I have a rebuilt 360 short block I was thinking of trying the same thing. I know it would be alot slower than using aftermarket. But it would be fun to see how fast you could get it. I was thinking 340 grind cam. Stock 4 barrel 360 intake, stock 318 manifolds with dual exhaust( I cant aford those high dollar hi-po 340 manifolds). I have a 8 3/4 rear end with factory 3:91 gears and sure-grip. I already bought a tci breakaway converter, but its only 2500 stall and I think they made factory high stall converters close to that. I have striped everything I could out of the car and truthfully from pushing it around it feels really light.
So I wondering what yall think of my idea. Good, bad or really bad. Give me some idea's.

Even with the 318 manifolds, you can do 13's. Stripped car! Oh yea. Could use more stall and a wide set of meats to grip the launch.

Well I have a nice brand new set of 225/55/15 and some 15x 8 black spokes I'm gonna try and fit on the back. Might have to move the springs. Yeah I've heard about those magnum manifolds. I thought only early year dakoka manifolds would fit.
If I could get in the 13's that would be respectable. Anyone know where to get a 340 grind cam? Yeah daredevil I am up by tulsa. I live about 30 miles east of tulsa.

I have a set of manifolds off an R/T let me know if you are interested. I'm pretty sure I also have most or all of the bolts too.

If you use the 340 cam, be sure to get the 68 4-spd cam and also the valve springs to go with it. It used to be available from Mopar Performance, but I also think comp cams reproduces it.

You might also want to bump up the compression a little by decking the block. I am sure someone else can help with how much.

Good luck with your project, sounds like fun!

I have a new Crane 340 re-pro cam. I'm not sure if it's the 4 speed one or not. 429" & .444" lift and 210* & 221* duration @ .050".

my dadfs in owasso . next time i visit ill check if you need anything . I have a whole garage full of stuff

ok here goes

340 scamp- do you know if those r/t manifolds will fit? its a no power steering car so that should be alittle more clearance.

daredevil- thanks man, I can use all the help I can get. I just hauled up my 8 3/4 axle I got from my old man friend. 50 bucks, ITs not an a-body but its the next best thing. ITs from an early b-body. The spring perch is 44 instead of 43 like an A-body. I think I can make it work without moving the perches. If I can,t I have a welder and a torch that can fix it.

dusted74- thanks, I'm gonna do some research on that cam thing I'll get it back to ya. how much were you wanting for it?

briant- thanks for the advice, I think your right about that. the comp cams repo has quite abit more lift than the one dusted74 has and a different lobe center.

If you're gonna buy a cam and lifters, you can do a lot better that a 40 year old factory grind. Don't leave HP on the plate just to say you're using factory parts. Just don't make no sense. Find a compcams extreme energy or voodoo cam. You won't be sorry.

Well then If I do that I might as well buy all aftermarket stuff. Its all or nuthin buddy! I'm still kickin the idea around. I think it would be fun to see how fast you could get on all stock parts. There are tons of guys running a 360 on here with kb107 pistons, air gap intakes, 750 holley's , headers, j heads, etc. Alittle more interesting when you narrow it down to factory parts. Maybe your missing the point.
If I got an aftermarket cam because it makes more power. Why wouldent I get an aftermarket intake too, and ditch the manifolds for headers. Hell I could get some w-5 heads and a stroker kit and go for high 9's!
The point is sometimes is fun to be alittle different. Or maybe I'm just nuts, i dont know!

If you are unwilling to use aftermarket parts then you better get rid of that converter too.

I built my 73 Charger 440 with all factory or Direct Connection parts, even used their porting templates to port the heads. Bought the fuel pumps and carb from DC too, as well as the .590 lift solid cam. It ran 11.50's.

I'll be sure and throw the converter in the trash tomorrow. I wouldent wanna cheat. No seriously, I give up, I think my idea sucks. F#ck it, I'll just build an engine and see how the thing runs!
