Folks,

Down to the steering shaft bearings upper snap ring. The two holes in the snap ring are really tiny and removal tool will not work. Any suggestions on how to get by this little bugger ?

I have a mass of wires attached to the turn signal assembly. Do I need to cut all of them to get the existing collars off and new ones on ?

I looked for a thread showing how this was done but no joy....service manual is not a lot of help.

Thanks
ian.

The snap rings are a bit of a pain. I ended up using really little set of pliers for mine, but it took some patience and trial and error.

The wires and the connecter can be fed up through the steering collars, there's a spot where they can be passed through. You kinda have to tilt the connector at the right angle and pull it through from the top while you push it up from the bottom. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to re-assemble the column and install the switch with the wires intact.

If all else fails, invest in inexpensive snap ring pliers that come with interchangeable tips. A couple of right-angle pick tools should allow you to grab and spread the ends of the snap ring too.

I think I am too early in he removal to see what you are talking about with the wires.

I do have a set of dental pics..you never know...I shall try.

Thanks
ian.

Now I know why I bought those dental piks... it worked and now I see what you are referring to about the wires.

I have run into a disk with groves in it...must be for the auto ? ... or steering wheel lock ? oddly enough, it isn't in the service manual.

Will try to remove it now.

Thanks
ian.

Ok...puzzled again. Seems like this car is fighting me at every step.

Here I am:

I took off the lower c clip and I thought this disk would pop out.

I have gently pried from the bottom and have compressed the stalk so I could look under it and I don't see a way to release this. The service manual doesn't note it.

Do I need to remove the shift handle on the lower collar ? or, do I need to attach my puller and remove the disk ?

Thanks
Ian.

the part i colored yellow is a sleeve ....pry this sleeve up and it will reveal a drift pin under that goes through the shaft ...the drift pin only goes one direction ......pound out the drift pin with punch and the disk will come off and the shaft will release through the bottom.

It actually looks like someone has tried this before. I have tried a pik and a screwdriver down the side but it seems frozen.

If I press down on the whole assembly, it forces the shaft up a half inch or so. In theory, should the disk not be able to be pushed down the disk to reveal the pin ?

How important is this disk ? Would I be better off to take the grinder to the side so I can pry it off ?

Sorry for all the questions..I know this should be easy.

Thanks
ian.

the disk locks the steering wheel when key is out..

the sleeve is a little tricky to come off but they do come off and the drift pin shouldnt hassle you that much

Please bear with me...I am somewhat confused.

You have the steering shaft, then a sleeve, then this disk which sides envelope the second sleeve.

I need to pry the second one up to find the pin..would that not be the same as pushing the outer one down ?

I can see where the outer one is important.

Is the outer sleeve attached to the inner one in any way other than friction fit ?

I fear I am damaging the outer sleeve and not moving the middle sleeve...

.............there is a special u shaped tool that screws on to the shaft that allows u to push down the wheel so u can get the pin out, u really need it to put it back together........kim......

70duster...ok, I think I have it.

What I am looking at is actually 2 pieces...your second and third pics explain a lot. You web site is informative as well.

Back downstairs.

Ok, that was too easy..I feel stoopid :(

Out of curiosity, are there any other potential roadblocks I am going to hit with this collar swap ?

Thanks
Ian.

i think the same problem got us all the first time ......i for one had the same road block the first time i ever took a column apart. :tard:

It is done....thank you all.

Now for the clean up and paint then put back together. I am surprised how dirty it was inside.

It does feel good to be working on it again.

Ian :) :)
