Just had Paypal shut down my account till I supply a lot of private info for no reason and wondered if this had happened to anybody else? They want a photo id (drivers license) social security number and a copy of something showing my address even though I have a verified one. Of course there's not one place to email them or talk to a real human. The account was recently opened because we have a new bank. Address is the same. Been using Paypal for years, not one hitch till now. I've only did 2 transactions, 1 to Rock Auto and I bought a Betty Crocker cookbook off Ebay. Real hardcore stuff. I cannot see giving them this info and why the hell they need it. It is the legitimate account for Paypal too. The only other thing I can think off is maybe they raised the security level up and the name John Smith is a red flag to them like the airports. Real funny too when a guy in a turban gets right on the plane and simply because my parents lack imagination, I get profiled and have to prove why I want to get on the plane, like having a ticket isn't enough. Anyways I'd like to hear if anybody else has had Paypal ask you to provide info that they tell you to not provide to people who ask for it using the paypal logo.

Sounds bogus to me......I would at least talk to them first.

Log on to PayPal and find their resolution center. At the bottom of that page click on "contact". Have a pad and pen ready because it will show you a toll free number and more importantly a one time use code to let the call go through. If you wait too long, the code will expire and you will have to start over again.

I have called them before, got a real person every time and they were very pleasant and helpful.

do not respond to emails from paypal...got to paypal.com and sign in.....the emails are scams...

if you click on the email link.. and signed in......you better get ahold of paypal...

How did you find out the account was closed or restricted. If this was in an e-mail... likely a scam.

You got asked for this in an email?
Let's see the address of who sent the email to you.
Don't open it.
You do not have to open it to see the sender's address.
........Post it here.

The ONLY thing you should get from PayPal is a receipt/confirmation for a purchase you made. Anything else, DELETE!

Paypal does ask for a photocopy of your DL to confirm your account now. It's used to get money out of people who try to scam others.

Not sure of the SSN though.

So far it's legit. I didn't reply to the email but went directly to the website. Just like THEY tell you to do. Called a 888 number and some Canadian answered and told me that the very info that they are asking for, is in fact the info that they want and it is a random thing that all accounts will be asked to verify this info eventually because they are required to by law. I said, "So you are asking for the very info you say not to provide to emails asking for it". Finally after repeating myself 5 or 6 times he gave me the above line about the government requiring it. I told him nicely that I probably would not be using their service any longer and hung up. He offered to get the ball rolling to clear it up if I would give him my social security number over the phone.:finga: I'm smelling a class action lawsuit on the way. I know at least a hundred people that no way in hell would they give out this kind of info. I guess they spin a wheel to see who they piss off today and I was the lucky winner. What the hell does a car guy do without a Paypal account? Guess I'll have to buy a tuner so I can do all my shopping at Autozone. What a day, started out as abodylurker and now I'll be the new guy on fartcansandstickers registry.

I get e-mails all the time telling me my Pay Pal account will be closed or put on hold if I don't do "this" or "that". I carefully move them to my junk folder. Then I go to my ebay website (where I feel safe) and access my PP account from there. It has never been closed or put on hold or anything. The few times I have reported these e-mails to PP they take the info and I never hear anything back. So now I ignore all e-mails pertaining to my PP account. You can always access your PP account through their website and see your account status anyway.
One of the e-mails was so stupid.. the title said, "From pypal"...really, the idiot scammers can't even spell PP correctly!!!!

treblig

I have never heard of that, you won't likely reach a Canadian rep. they don't exist. Don't give them anything. Something is definitely fishy.

It says my paypal is limited. They allow me to put money in but not pay anything and everytime I access my account summary, it pops up a warning that my account is limited until I clear it up. So far it's legit or North Korea is PO at Paypal now and Canada is cooperating with them. Checking into alternative pay sites as of right now.

Direct copy of email. I didn't use any of the links on it. I have it in my favorites.

I did this and they were real polite and asked me for the info like the website stated. Acted like he had heard my bewilderment with it a thousand times.

Unfortunately it is very legit.
You can thank the IRS for it too. More specifically the state you live in is trying to collect sales tax on internet sales.
In Ohio there is block you check off on the state tax form and you're supposed to enter the amount you spent online then pay sales tax on that. Yeah, right!
But good ol' Paypal is going to rat you out to the IRS.
I have a friend who sells heavily on ebay and accepts Paypal, he actually gets a 1099 from Paypal and required to verify ID several times a year. He *****'s about Paypal constantly, but feels his options are limited. ebay gives sellers so few options.

Yes. From what you posted, it's legit.

Pony up the info or play elsewhere.

I had to give a SSN for mine because they pay interest on balances. Even if it's mere pennies.

Very sad, so far that doesn't exist here in my state. I would call it done. if that is what it takes. Back to the magazines, money orders, and sales that take 10 days instead of two days. I could live with that. No Internet, or Gov't interference. In 1995 that is how I sold parts. Cheer up!

I got a email last week saying the same thing. I opened a 2nd window to paypal to check. it showed my account had no problems. it's a scam. do not open the link at the bottom of that page.

STRAIGHT FROM THE PAYPAL WEBSITE:

The US Patriot Act requires PayPal to implement a Customer Identification Program (CIP). Each country or region has specific CIP requirements for the collection of customer data. Some examples of the information we collect and verify can include your name, physical address, date of birth, and National/Tax ID number (SSN). To verify your identity, we use a National Database to obtain a positive match of legal name, address, date of birth, and SSN.

You can send money, receive money, and withdraw money without completing the CIP Process. Additionally, you may be eligible to benefit from the use of the following products and services once we are able to verify, your CIP information:

Add Money (Add money from your bank account or a Money Pak into your PayPal account)
PayPal Debit Card
Grace Period Payments
Other various product offerings (examples)
NetSpend PayPal Prepaid Card
PayPal Here
Mobile Check Capture
Cash-In Products, Cards, Coinstar, Retailer, and/or other partners
Digital Goods when you use a prepaid option
Top Up, Balance Account Manager, Billpay, and/or other features

Please Note: Sometimes finding your information using the National Database doesn't work because the information is unavailable or your name or address has changed.

If we cannot verify your personal information, we’ll ask you to send us documentation through our Resolution Center that confirms your identity.

Here is a list of the document options you can send us to help confirm your identity, address, and SSN:

Proof of Identity:
Driver’s license
Passport
State or Government issued ID
Proof of Address:
Utility Bill
Bank Statement
Credit Card Statement
Proof of SSN:
Social Security Card
Tax Return Documents
W2
Paycheck Stubs

2 days agi I got emal from Paypal, said my is restricted till I furnished " what would have been ALL my personal info, including S S no. I called palpal they said it was NOT from them. it looked for real, but then again it wasn't.

It's legit guys, and is another breach of our privacy/security as allowed by the passing of the "Patriot Act"

You do still have to verify these emails are actually from who they say they are.

The Patriot Act allows them to make and enforce laws that would not normally be acceptable, and labeling a person or group of persons "terrorist" allows them to completely strip away any and all consitutional or human rights without any legal reason or explanation.
ALL because of the passing of the "Patriot Act"

So far they have;
New ways to watch you. (that you can't avoid)
New ways to accuse you. (that you can't fight)
New ways to find you. (all this new information, phones with GPS and other tech)
And new ways to carry out any sentence they wish, without any legal recourse.

Right now they are working on getting away from us reporting income to the IRS, and moving to them watching it for you.
This is what part of the Paypal SSN number thing is all about.

ALL because of the passing of the "Patriot Act" allows them to to pretty much do whatever they want.
It also gives them the legal right to change the rules and laws to accomodate anything else they want to include.

Are we having fun yet?

We have already seen multiple cases in how our Gov is able to protect out information and data, right?

But yet people that see it and tell others about what's really going on are called "Conspiracy Theorist" but it's not just a theory.

One thing to remember about REAL emails from paypal is that they ALWAYS address you by your name, NOT "Dear Paypal Member" or "Dear Customer." The salutation used is the fastest, easiest way to tell if it's really from paypal or just a scammer.

there are ways to make a website look EXACTLY like paypal. (or banks, etc.)

this is why you NEVER click links in supposed emails from paypal (or banks) and follow them to a website. unless you know what you are doing you could be landed on a fake website.

this is also why you ALWAYS go to paypal by opening a browser and going to www.paypal.com (same for your banks.)

if you cant remember how to type the website for paypal you should not be on the internet, or you are going to get robbed blind. you will end up having to get a new social security number, new drivers license. new bank accounts and new credit cards.
be careful
