I have a bum ankle, basically broke a tiny triangle off the bottom outside tip 10 years ago and then 3 years ago rolled it both ways and tore the ligaments and tendons. The ankle is loose and is causing me grief, no physio as there are small pieces crunching around and tendons and ligaments are super loose.

I have to have surgery aparrently and my doctor has come highly recommended and would not suggest surgery if he didn't think it was neccessary.

Has anyone else had ankle issues requiring surgery??? I would like to hear what they have to say about the process and healing.

Thanks,

Brett

I hope I'm not in the same boat. Just badly sprained my ankle Friday at work. They tell me I am to not use it for three week, then have it re-examined. Wish you all the best.

Good luck! I hope so!

I was skating with my son and launched and came down from 4 feet onto concrete and the ankle took my full weight over to the outside and then I over-corrected it all the way to the left side but prior to that I had sprained it at least 5 or 6 times. I almost didn't hve time to get my shoe off, it just blew up.

Take it easy on the ankle as the cartilage and tendons etc will need to heal. If you get gung ho you will have nasty issues in the future as it just breaks down. It really realy sucks, believe me.

Broke my ankle 3 years ago and the Dr said he thought I should have surgery and I passed on it, big mistake..I have had pain and discomfort for the past 3 years and will get the surgery soon..I spoke to my Dr and they can still do the surgery..

I fell 20ft, to the concrete, about 2 years ago, and broke both ankles. They were hairline fractures and my feet turned purple.. I spent a couple days off my feet and then when back to work in horrible pain because I have a family to support. One of my competitors sabotaged my roof cleaning equipment by dumping soap in it. I could have been killed. He's locked up for a long time now. That would make a interesting thread. luckily I'm strong and survived the fall. It would have killed most people.

I have broken both of mine and had surgery on both. One has titanium pins and one has a plate with 6 screws. I can walk and get around pretty well still. I would definately get surgery.

I've broken my left ankle twice, in three places. Once with surgery, and once without. By what you describe, I don't think you have much choice.

It hurts every day, and I can really feel it when the weather changes. I think if I had the plate an ten screws removed it would be less painful, but that's another surgery and several weeks on crutches recovering. I'll wait and see.

Ive folded twisted bent the wrong way you name it i done it to my right ankle, i went to a dr a couple of years ago and told the dr i need it fixed as i cant fully flex it in all directions so he said ok, it hurt to walk so i went to buy me a pair of red wing boots to help support my rt ankle and so far its been ok, the dr told me i had developed artheritis and a surgical procedure would help but would take a long time to get it up to snuff so ive put it off for now.

shattered mine 20 years ago still cant run or walk well

shattered mine too about 20 years back. jumped off a wall that was a little higher than it looked and shattered the right ankle and fractured my heel. friggin hurt man! was treated by the best ortho doc in seattle at the time, he did the best he could, but when the ankle socket is in a thousand pieces its pretty hard to fix. he said i'd have arthritis when i get older. he was right. good luck, man!

I have a steel plate and 6 screws holding my left ankle together. Took about 5-6 months to feel normal again. I still get some twinges once in awhile, and avoid anything rubbing against my ankle because one of the screws protrudes a little.

Wow thanks guys, definitely getting the surgery. Have to wait a while as acting season starts now till April and have to earn some money. Apparently they have to take a tendon from another part of the ankle that regenerates and use it to fix the ones that are stretched and torn and also scrape all the little pieces of bone out. Will leave a nice big scar. Yay for me.

Speaking of falls-this ones a bit of a long story and involves an urban cliff jumping legend as well: I imported my Valiant Charger from Australia to Cape Town for the first time in 2003 and the guy who was dealing with import was having drinks at the roof bar with his work colleagues at the company building. So he went to the bathroom, was a bit sozzled and came back and everybody had left and locked up. Being sozzled he decided to try and climb down the five stories of the building which is entirely possible due to it's design. The problem was that it was drizzling. So he climbed over the ledge at the fifth story and basically slipped feet first to the pavement. I asked him what happened and he said he just slipped, fell, landed feet first followed by his face straight into the pavement. his legs immediately shattered and his jaw broke out of the sockets in his skull and was kind of hanging in his neck. he broke almost all of his teeth. i asked if he felt any pain as usually shock kicks in straight away. he said no and that it was like tripping in public-he felt really embarrassed and tried to get up immediately ad walk off but his legs were basically jelly. He was on crutches with pins in his legs and his mouth was braced up. So we got to talking and I told hm about the cliff jump we used to do which was about 25 meters (82 feet) and how a friend of ours had compressed his spine on the jump ad another had gone through his shoes when he jumped. I relayed this urban legend about the jump to him and he then told me he knew the girls it happened to. Firstly we only ever jumped in long pants and shoes. Apparently these girls he knew had gone up there, everyone had a bit of spliff and decided to jump. The girls were in bikinis. The one girl jumped ad basically ripped herself due to the pressure of the impact on the water. I was horrified that the urban myth we had known about since we were teens was true. Here's a pic of my buddy jumping the day our other friend compressed his spine. Our other friend had time to take 2 photos with a manual wind camera in the time he was in the air. I am crouched right on the ledge just to the centre left f the top photo. My friend is 6,6 feet tall. I only did this jump once and never again when I was 19.

Be prepared for a long time of non weight bearing on that ankle. At least that is what I've had to deal with on my last 2 surgery's. One by choice the other by stupidity.

I had six surgeries on my ankle and its still not fixed. I had a piece of bone break off the corner of my talus. The grafts never healed completely and I still have a void. Each surgery was at the least 12 weeks of crutches.

they said mine looked like a car windshield someone hit with a brick, so they took the small fragments out, put the bigger pieces back where they belonged and held everything together with an erector set! I asked the doctor when it would stop hurting, he said when I am 80 cause by then I should be dead. and yea the arthritis is a *****
