Anyone here have knee problems?

I'm going to the doctors for the second time regarding my knees this Friday. A year ago or so I was fielding some balls on the baseball field when my knee started hurting as I was running to one. I limped around for a day or so and then it was fine. Last summer I went for a run and halfway through it my knee felt like it was tearing apart on the inside. Almost like my lower leg is disconnecting from my upper leg on the inside of my knee. When I would lift my foot up and it wasn't being supported by the ground, it would hurt like hell. My right knee hurt the worst and my left wasn't far behind at this point.

I went to the docs and they took x rays and said nothing was wrong there. I went to a physical therapist after that and he was stretching me and told me that I was about the least flexible person he's ever seen.

So I've been stretching a few times a week for the last 3 or 4 months and my flexibility has gotten a lot better. Now for the last couple months I've noticed that my legs are just sore in general. They just feel sore when I'm walking or just sitting there. At night when I'm trying to sleep on my side, I'll wake up because the leg that I'm laying on is so sore. I'll flip to my other side and then that leg will hurt like hell. Then I end up having to sleep on my back so I can actually rest. I don't think its from stretching because I was stretching for a couple months before the general leg soreness came into play.

I went and played basketball with my friends the other day and the knees felt a little sore after that. I got home and when I looked at my knees they were both swollen as hell. I've been icing them ever since and the swelling has gone down, but it's still there and my knees and legs still hurt pretty badly.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? I just don't want to go to the doctors and have them tell me to ice it and stretch and all that crap. It has to be something more than that at this point. I'm only 26 and I can't run or really even pivot off either knee anymore. I'd just like to carry as much info as I can into the docs office so I can actually figure out whats wrong with me.
 
I'm having a similar issue with my right knee. Don't want to get into what I did to it but I recommend someone in the sports medicine field who is used to seeing and diagnosing this type of injury.
 
Yes I know the exact same pain that you have. I'm 56 years old and have worked hard all my life. You know, lifting engine blocks by hand instead of using a lift or asking someone to help you. Years and years of doing dumb stuff like that. Over the last five years the pain has really gotton bad in my hips and knees. I went to a very good sports orthopedic doctor and he had a full body bone scan done. It turns out I have severe osteoarthritis which means I don't have any cartilage left in any of my joints. I started taking Celebrex for pain (I don't have any heart problems) which helps alot. On my next visit the doctor is going to inject both knees with some new stuff on the market. After that the only alternative is knee replacements. That will only happen when I can't walk anymore or I can't stand the pain. I work for CSX Railroad and will probably have to retire early on disability. I hope not. Go see a good sports orthopedic doctor and good luck! You are way too young to be crippled!

yeah , i ended up having one knee cap realigned with screws , you might want to ask your doctor about getting a knee brace. the one i have is made out of neoprene or some kind of stretchy material and it squeezes the muscles enough to make my leg more stable. it does make my leg feel like it can handle more abuse when i wear it.
 
glucosamine work for me I dont know if it will help you though.xrays only show bone damage from what i was told.Try an mri it will show tissue damage.
 
I'm in the same boat as fastfish, only my knee pain started when I was in my late '20's It's hurt me for years and years to "get down" on my knees, or squat.

Now I'm 62, have severe osteo problems, and went to the hospital because of an interaction with my arthritis meds, and now have gastric troubles on top of it.

I'm now "trying out" a med that rubs into the skin instead of swallowing pills

I wish you luck. I encourage you -- if you have the money -- to pursue this with doctors or a DIFFERENT doctor until you get some answers.

Osteo runs on both sides of my family. My Dad only lived to 71, but he was getting to be in bad shape.

I've tried to keep exercising, but that only goes so far, and begins to "tear you back down." It's a narrow line to tread.
 
Glucosamine/Chondroitin/HA keeps me goin'........

My knees have been bad for years......too much roofing on my knees and stressing my joints carrying heavy loads up ladders I guess......(not to mention 16 years of cuttin' and haulin' and burnin' firewood to keep from freezing).

My back is bad too.......I use a Back2Life machine and it's GREAT for my back....stretches the discs and relaxes everything, BUT it also tends to stretch my KNEE joints in a bad way.......makes them ache...HATE it.......

Without the supplements, I'd be pretty well physically useless. :bom: Tickin' time bo-m I guess.
 
I've had problems with my knees for years (I'm 55) from lifting....I used to deliver appliances and furniture and of course the abuse in the garage. I go to a chiropractor when they get too bad and he adjusts them..normally wait til I can just barely walk but the swelling goes down and I get movement without pain. That was until last year when I had my left knee go out from under me when I was on a ladder. I fell and broke my ankle, tibia just below the knee, cracked my hip and tore the PCL and ACL in my knee, now it just pretty much hurts all the time. By the end of a half day of deer hunting I'm done.
Check the sports med bit though medical docs seem kinda stumped when they can't see anything broken.
 
I wrecked my left knee about 14 years ago playing hockey. I tore my acl and damaged the cartilage severely. I had it scoped about 12 years ago and now i'm having troubles again with it. I go to physiotherapy once a week and had custom made orthotics for my shoes. The knee is a lot better, but i know it's only a matter of time before i have a knee replacement. I need it now, but the doctors say it shouldn't be done until i'm in my mid 50's. I'm 48 now. I have gone to specialists, orthopedic surgeons, had x rays, MRI, all of it. The phsiotherapist i see is a sports injury specialist.
All i can do now is do the physio, and maybe get a knee brace in the future. Then wait until i can get a knee replacement in 7 years.
My advice to you is to discontinue the sports that have a tendancy toward shock loads to your knees, and any other heavy load bearing. You are too young to be crippled. Believe me, 20 years from now you will thank yourself for it.
Also, see a specialist that is in the sports therapy field and follow their instructions to a "T".

Don't have arthroscopy unless you have to unless you like being able to predict the weather. Ask me how I know.
 
20+ years ago I had an arthroscopy done because a sports med doc thought I had partially torn the meniscus in my left knee. When I woke up he told me it was arthritis and my knee looked like it was 65 years old (due to too much basketball in my earlier years) and that I would need a knee replacement by the time I was 50. I held the replacement off until I was 59 and was tired of the constant pain when walking or standing. Stairs were not my friend either.
Anyway, the total knee replacement three years ago was the best thing I ever did - I was bowling again 3 months after replacing the knee in my sliding leg. It's a great thing to be able to walk without pain. Only thing is that I'll never have a NBA career since the I'm not supposed to either run or jump on the replaced knee.
Suggest you get a really good joint specialist to check out your knee.
