so now a new issue I currently have a pair of rims for the back of my stock tire wells on my 65 dodge dart the are 15 x7 and the tires are 235/75/15 I'm stay with that tire size but I know I need to swap rims to the correct ones . these 2 rim I measured from where the drum presses up against the rim to the outside edge of the lip of the rim and it is 4" As you can see in the photo the tire almost touches the lip of the tire well and there is 1"to 1"-1/2 gap between rim/tire and leaf spring . also the weight of the car is not down on completly since the back half is on blocks .

So you're saying if you went with 4.5" backspacing you would gain 1/2" between tire and fender and lose 1/2" between tire and leaf spring.

Check measurement on both sides of the car before committing to new rims.

Why not run it as is?

That's a big tire
235 x 0.75 / 25.4 x 2 + 15=28.88"
235 / 25.4 = 9.25"

Tire bulge past rim is 1.125" on each side

If you have a 4" backspace now and go to a 3.5" backspace, you'd be moving the whole thing out a half inch, putting the tire into the wheel lip more. You want to go to a 4.5" backspace, to move the tire inward toward the spring and away from the wheel lip....
