so this is going to be my first year drag racing and was wondering what you all use for a battery charger? I have no alt. I will have to charge between rounds(if i make it that far) would like a more compact one as not much room. thanks for your help!!

First year raceing,,,,put a alt on it.The extra worrying and chargeing or changeing batteries isnt worth it.Been there done that. Was alot more fun and relaxing after I put the alt back on.MY OPINION.Guzzi Mark

X 2, less headache to use an alternator and not have to charge between rounds.....unless you have an alternator that you can't keep a belt on :banghead:........(my current problem).

I have a lightweight 50 amp alternator because the rules require one. But it won't keep the battery fully charged, especially with cooling off the engine with the electric water pump and fan. I use an automatic taper-charge charger set at 10 amps between rounds as well to keep it topped off. An alternator is a good idea regardless.

Do not use "manual" battery chargers because they can cook your battery if left on too long. May not be as much of an issue at the races between fast paced rounds, but at least you can set-and-forget with the automatic versions anytime because it tapers down the charge rate, then maintains it by cycling.

These are great.

Can be used as a charger and/or a clean electronics quality 12 volt power supply.
They are fully overvolt and polarity protected, and also you can get the "Charge Wizard" connector that shows state of charge and will let you override the automatic charging when needed.
They back down the output as the battery is charging until the battery is at about 13.6 volt completely automatic and have a storage mode that bumps the charge rate for 15 min every 24 hours. (Sulfation) protection.
A lot of show people use them to run thier stereo's and lighting at the shows.
They are originally intended for RV's but they sure do work for cars also, as you can see by the Amp outputs.
You can leave these on a battery any time the care is just sitting and it will maintain the battery without overcharging it.
Might want to do a little reading on them as they are darn fine units for the price.

This is my first year with a car i have been helping some friends so i have lots of time at the track. thanks for your help though I do have one i coild put on i will bring it with on test day and see how things go.
