What are some good recommendations for a battery. $200 or less.. A lot less if possible and it's a decent battery.
I've read it's a "group 24" battery, but I've seen 24's that have a letter after... Any certain one to avoid or that is necessary..?
The one in my car now was purchased 3 years ago, and I pretty sure it's a 24 (no labels on it now)... but does seem a bit tall..?

I bought a Group 24 for my Dart Sport and for the Swinger and should be appropriate for your Demon.
I usually trust Interstate but on my most recent purchase I went with the Ever-Start from Walmart since I was gonna make a 'resto' battery out of it.
I think Interstate MTP series is about $220 now except for the M series or budget line (less CCA and less warranty) which might be $140 or so.
 
The BCI (Battery Council International) Group size top post battery for a 1972 Demon is Group 24, without suffix lettering. Group 24H and 24T are ~1/2" and ~3/4" taller respectively. Group 24F and Group 24R are the same in size, but have the battery post terminals reversed for Ford and other applications. A Group 34 battery can be substituted if using a 1" spacer or shorter J-bolts. Group 34 is the same length and width but is 1" shorter. Group 34R batteries have reversed terminals. Various battery brands can vary widely in ratings, performance, and durability, even within the same brand. Most automotive batteries are actually made by a few manufacturers and distributed under various brands. I currently use Deka for Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries, although these are not available in Group 24. Deka AGM is available in Group 34. For flooded lead acid batteries, I use Continental (the tire manufacturer). The Continental batteries are available at my local parts store, and they are plain black, so I can "dress them up" as Mopar batteries using a Weskar kit:

So far the Continental have been performing well in both Group 24 and Group 27 sizes. Group 27 is a longer, higher capacity version of the Group 24.

I've been told there are currently only 2 or maybe 3 actual manufacturers in the US, one of them is Johnson Controls. They were recommended to me, so find out who actually makes the thing. One of the BEST ways to buy a battery is PRICE versus WEIGHT. WEIGHT tells you what is IN the battery for lead. As in LED. As in PLATES
 
Johnson Controls was making batteries for Walmart in some regions. Not sure if that's the case in your area. East Penn was another manufacturer they used. You can usually tell by the model number or maybe even the serial number on the battery.

Absorbed Glass Mat is my preference. Price around.
About $180-200. OR If you have a Auto Zone near for my old car I went with a deep cycle as the car gets seldom use.
The Duralast type 24 DC-DL is only $109.My last one lasted 8 years.

I think Johnson was bought out. Can't comment on the newer products, but I know that the older stuff was top notch.
 
The big battery companies like Varta can make batteries to various price points so the mfg's name doesn't mean much to me. I suppose the brand name might help or in most cases the price. The best battery I owned was an Interstate. According to the internet a good battery lasts 3-5 years lol
 
napa has a 6524, 7524, 8424AAA, 6534,8434AAA. made by east penn. stay away from the 65 series batts. 75 series has 2 year free replacement and AAA has 3 year free replacement. 18.00 core. maybe check into ordering online for a discount. cca amps range from 550-725. 24/34
 
24 fits fine in mine, 24R is reverse post and won't work. I typically hit up the farm supply store and grab whatever is cheap (usually Rural King and $70 with a 60 month warranty, typically get 3-4 years out of them if not more).
