Best glasspack to run?

-
Back in the old days, when I was young, I swapped gears and exhaust systems on my 57 Chevy on a monthly, if not weekly basis. I usually put the quiet (sort of) turbo mufflers on with the 3.08s
When the 4.56s were in, I usually had some glasspacks that were basically header mufflers..... only there was NO glass left. Hit them with a wrench, they would ring like a bell.
I'm sure I was very popular with the neighbors.......
Did the same thing with turbo muffler’s and turndown’s at the axle and header mufflers, got a date change the exhaust. lol

Classic Chambered PowerSticks beat any glasspacks in the sound department IMO and have no fiberglass in them, just louvers and the outer shell is "pinched" in 4-5 spots to create chambers. I've had them on my Duster since 2010 and wouldn't change them for anything. Loud and rowdy on the outside of the car but minimal drone on the inside and no popping/afterfiring to speak of.

I run this setup and its surprisingly quiet for what it is but lightweight and good flowing.
Hedman Hedders 18701 Hedman Universal Header X-Tensions | Summit Racing
Dynomax Performance 24250 Dynomax Mini Race Bullet Mufflers | Summit Racing
Summit Racing SUM-681300 Summit Racing™ Lap Joint Band Clamps | Summit Racing
The bullets just slip fit so no welding and you can take them off pretty easy and just run the collector extensions. The extensions fit well with the "exit" of the headers in relation to the cross member as well.

Yeah, I'm about 40 years too old for header mufflers on the street for my cars, but that's what the op was asking for.
Then again, I have straight thru magnaflows off the fenderwell headers on one of mine, right now. They are the longest ones I could fit, however.

My advice, buy the cheapest glasspacks you can find; because you’ll be throwing them in the dumpster before too long.

Dougs or hedman/hooker/flowtech generic ones, easy to clock and tuck up tight, of course tti's have the angle exit and don't play nice with them.
Yea I thought so. I use them on the standard 1-5/8 headers. They clear the trans crossmember great. There a huge help of you want to install an H pipe.

I love the sound of glass packs, especially before they get blown out. I go with the longest ones I can find and put them as far back as I can, in front of the rear end.

Been running straight pipes since the 70's and have never had ticket....but, I also run a full system all the way to the bumper and that helps. Did have a 66 Mustang Fastback with a mild 289 with Smithy's Green Power glass packs that exited out in front of the rear tires. All those things did was amplify the noise lol. You can also tone down a straight pipe system by using a larger diameter pipe and add a lot of crimps to it. Doesn't hurt the flow either....boundary layer air is slow anyways and the center layer is what moves and the crimps help to reduce the sound waves. I've found some mufflers shops had crimping dies but don't know of any around here anymore. Most of the mom and pop exhaust shops have closed down. If you use 1/4" deep crimps, add 1/2" diameter to the pipe you use to crimp. The last one I did only had 1/8" deep crimps and were done with a muffler clamp (pita) in a 36" long pipe but only did 7 crimps. Made a difference but not all that much. One of these days I'll make my own crimping dies.
