What oil or oil additives do you guys like to run in engines with a solid lifter cam that need a high zinc ppm, im running vr1 now, i also run castrol and add lucas break in addative.
 
I run Joe Gibbs 10w-30 in my engine..... So far so good.

There is one weight of Mobil1 Synthetic recommended for flat tappet engines: 15w50. It contains 1300ppm of zinc and of phosphorus.

This is not cheap ($8.50/qt), but it might be easier to find at the local store than Joe Gibbs, or Brad Penn.
 
This is what we run in our motors. There is No better racing oil.

Have always had the best luck with Valvoline. Gonna have to try the racing oil. I don't need anything heavier than 30 wt. tmm
 
lucas has a new oil out for flat tappet cams with the zinc an ppf stuff,..aimed at muscle car owners,..ant herd no reports on it yet tho',..i run chevron delo 400 an add lucas additive....
 
my 2 pennies......Broke in my 408 with Joe Gibbs break in oil and running their non-synthetic now, no additives. .618 lift flat tappet with over 330 lbs. of open pressure on the springs. No issues.
 
I've been breaking in my engines with either conventional old race oil or conventional 15w-40 diesel oil with Comp Cams zinc additive. Amsoil now has a special break-in oil now which I have yet to try. After break-in I run the engine on Amsoil's 5w-20 Dominator race oil. The also have other viscosities in that series. But for street and high performance use, they have a wide variety of other high zinc oil to choose from as well.

mine was broke in with joe gibbs to im looking for a good oil that i can pick up at my local autozone or advanced auto realy dont want to mail order oil i spend to much on shipping as is between summit and ebay. i raed that lucas addative is good stuff but you dont need to use the whole 16 oz. bottle only half to much zinc causes wear. think ill run vr1 and add some lucas.
 
I like Brad Penn...Lots of the good stuff in it (including Zinc), proven track record, and well priced...works for me!
 
Valvoline VR1 Racing Formula SAE 20W-50 is all I have ever used, Been real happy with this product. A old race car buddy sware's by it.

I did, VR1. I break all my engines on it before we go full synthetic. Its good stuff and is tops in my book. I have used a lot of different oils, special break-in oils and all the hype. Good ol VR1 has never let me, or a lot of the guys I know running it, down.
 
Vr1 here........ In an emergency zinc additive to regular 20 w 50 will suffice if VR1 is not immediately available.

i agree thats what im gonna stick to, its easy to get at a fair price at my local auto parts store without buying for shipping and the price of joe gibbs or brad penn, i just threw this thread out there for some input from others thanks.

Thats impossible man...I live in Canada, the land of high prices, and I can get a case of 12 litres of Bradd Penn Grade 1 in a case for fifteen bucks cheaper then if I was to buy the equivalent of regular off the shelf oil on SALE!

Get with an oil supplier nearby you, im sure you can score the stuff without the shipping and for a price just as good as off the shelf oil...plus, if I remember correctly your guys Autozone's should carry Valvoline VR-1 oil, as I remember guys posting coupons for it not too long ago
