Any tips on removing these without pulling the intake? I'm trying to remove the driveshaft on a 440 so I can prime the oil pump - it's been sitting for some time. I've managed to lasso it with wire and pull it out about 1.5 inches - enough to disengage it from the oil pump but it won't come out any further. Any suggestions?

need to spray carb cleaner down shaft and work it to remove sludge buildup where it goes thru the bushing ..sounds like to me

Yup you're right, If the shaft was clean it would pull right out. No need to pull manifold you're just going to have to work it up and down.

Removing the intake on a big block is gravy, no coolant to deal with and only 8 bolts (ok six more for the end seals). I have even re-used the intake gasket with spray copper coat. Plus with the intake off it will be easier to get the drive shaft in the right position and inspect the cam. You are going to spend more time trying to save time wrestling with it.

Carb cleaner as suggested above and a big flat tip screw driver to run the thing in and out of the cam gear to break up the sludge. You might try using a hook of some sort once you get the gear up enough to get at the backside of the gear.

hi, after you get it snaked up with a hook, try using a large snap ring pliers, that you squeeze to open, this way you can pull it all way out and reinstall it
with out dropping it. makes life easier! besides, the hook and gear will not clear opening in block together.
