Biggest tire on Stock 67-69 Dart

Mine is not low budget, it's "no" budget!!!

I have a Ferd Versaille disc brake axle, so the wheel offset is different than stock, but I rebuilt the springs using the original leaves and a spring pack from a junker Duster. I used (except for just one main) the longest leaves out of the two spring packs.

Wheels are Cherokee before they went to the "new" bolt pattern, tires are 225x75x15, and you couldn't get much taller in there. They all but hit the front of the bodywork, and DO rub on some very hard right turns


You just need to move the axle back on the springs and center the rearend to the center of the wheel well

My Dads friend did that to his 67 gts with a dana stock length a body and did 3 inch relocation with HD springs with like 2 inch extra lift and stuffed 295-75-15 on some custom backspace magnum 500s
 
I'm running 255/60/15's drag radials on the back of my 68 Dart mounted on 15x7 with 4.5" backspaceing. No suspension or fender lip mods at all.

What tire and rim are running on the front??? Do you have any pictures???


I'm still trying to decide what size to go with up front.
 
215/60R15 up front (wider look) 205/70R15 (skinny look)
245/60R15 without mods (235/60R15 are cheaper because they make em in the firestone firehawk Indy 500)

I was wrong he is only using offset shackles with 15x7 wraped with 295-75-15 BFG rubber and the rearend is center in the wheel opening
It doesnt rub at all

I had a 68 Dart GT with an 8 3/4 and a 15 x 7 Centerline wheel, but don't remember the offset, and had a 255 60 15 Mickey Thompson Drag radial on it and did not have a problem. Stock spring location with cal tracs split leafs and bars.

I see what you're saying, but custom BS is out of the question. I'm on a budget and have already decided to go with the wheels I've already got- 15 x 7 steelies.

One way to get a custom BS without buying custom made wheels is to purchase a wheel with too much BS then measure perfectly and get the exact size spacers needed. I'm doing that with my 69 Dart right now. I have SS springs and the offset shackle. I'm stuffing a 17x9 " Mustang Bullitt wheel in there with 275/40/17 rubber. The axle is also moved back to be centered in the wheel well so I'll run ~26" tire with no issues. Haven't finalized the spacer size needed, but I think the final BS for my particular setup will be about 4.75". Since I'm running a 17" whel and the 275 is on the smaller side to fit on a 9" rim I won't get much ballooning of the sidewall - which also helps with clearance.

235/60/15 will fit perfectly on a 15 x 7 rim w/4.25" b/s.

245/60/15 might fit w/the correct b/s and rollin the wheel lip.

A 255/60/15 will not fit unless you install the offset kit or relocate the springs.

BTW, the 70 and up Darts wheel opening is different from the 67-69. A 255 tire will fit the 70 and up Darts, not a 67-69.

I'm also looking at replacing my 14 rims on my 67 dart. I see in this list that 235/60/15 fit with a rim that has 4.25 BS. My question is will that same tire fit with a rim that is 4 inch BS?
 
Are you keeping the stock drum to drum width when you LBP or are you swapping to wider, more common brakes? This will change the rear off set to be more positive. My stock a body 8-3/4 housing with 11x2.5 rear brakes requires a 5.375 backspace on a 15x8 rim to be centered in the wheel well. If you swap to LBP fron discs, you need a more positive offset as well, like a 15x7 with a 4.5 bs, but can get away with less if you use a smaller tire like a 215 or 205.
 
Yes stock 8 3/4. I have a set of 14-5.5 on it now. I would like to put a set of M&H dot drags (235/60-14)tires on my rims. Not sure what the stock BS is for those rims are but would they fit?

Yes. Mine will have a stock 8 3/4. Who sells stock steel rims(SBP) with the 4.25 BS? I have been looking at rims and can't find them. They all seem to have 3.75 BS (will that work??). I'm thinking of keeping my 205/60 -14 in front and getting a set of 15x6 with 235/60-15 M&H racemaster drags. Mine car still has the SPB axles on them. I would like to keep the axles if I can find rims for it.

Stockton will make any rim backspace you want .. supply them the sbp center section ...
Has anybody ever had stockton make sbp 14 inch centers into 15 outers ??? they can do them ... i asked ... does anybody have photos of this setup ?
 
I just ordered custom steelies from Wheel Vintiques. I believe these will allow me to run a 255/60/15. All I did was move the springs 1/2". But I should have enough clearance. I guess we'll find out...
 
Check the section width to tread width for a particular brand and tire. My car is a 69 Dart with SS springs (axle moved back 1.25" to center in wheel well) and the offset shackle. Had more room than I thought. The BF Goodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2 has a great tread width to section width ratio. I tried both the 275/40/17 and the 255/45/17. Both fit but the 275 would require I roll the inner quarter lip - plus The 255 has more sidewall and I like the look so I'm going with that.

Here's an example of the section width (actual width) to tread width (traction surface) of various tires and why I was impressed with the Sport Comp-2.

255/45/17 BFG Sport Comp-2 10" 9.7"
275/40/17 BFG Sport Comp-2 10.9" 10.8"

255/45/17 Sumitomo HTR Z II 10.3" 9.1"
275/40/17 Sumitomo HTR Z II 11.1" 9.9"

This is all from tirerack.com and I called and confirmed with a sales rep that these are as measured, but I'm not sure how or why they are so different. Hopefully it's real and I haven't been hoodwinked by marketing numbers. If true this seems really compelling to me. More tread and less sidewall width - exactly what A bodies need!
 
Just giving an update. I was able to fit 275/60/15s under it, with just a home made 1/2 relocation of the springs. The wheel are 15x7's with a 5" backspace.

I'm going through the same decision process on my 67 GTS, stock 8 3/4, stock disc/drum brakes, SS springs. I want to go with steel wheels 15x7, 4" backspace... with largest tires in stock wheel wells/location that allow good drivability(not rubbing). Do you think you could've fit the 255 60 15s without moving the spring in, with 4 inch backspace? When I measured, it looked like it would be tight but good.

Also what did you put up front?

Do you have a good side profile pic?
