I placed an ad in a local trader paper this week to find a Dart or Duster body(CHEAP)to build a big-block car.So a guy calls me today and says he has a 71 Duster 6cyl.,3-speed says he had bought from his neighbor lady a while back and that it's solid and has been garage kept all it's life.Says he'd like to have a GRAND for it,it was more than i was looking to spend so i said i wasn't interested!After he hangs up i'm thinking a solid Duster for a Grand and i passed on it(HOW F#$@ING Stupid am I??) What the HELL was i thinking!So of course i didn't get his number :cry: !I'm gonna put an ad back in the paper this week to see if he will call me back,hopefully he will see it!Any of you guys ever done something as stupid as this :?:
 
That was pretty boneheaded! :shock:

I did have a guy offer me a Harley panhead, to take him from Daytona to Ohio so he could get it & his other bike. I wasn't convinced the deal was legit.
 
Yea could have been a feakin deal, I'd have gone and looked at it!!! Little old Lady owned cars that are always in the garage are the best.
I'd change the add to all capitals and have it say I WANT TO BUY YOUR 1971 DUSTER AFTER ALL!!!!!!!!!! or make the add look like someone elses add, like WANTED 1971 DUSTER 6 CYL, 3 SPEED, There are only two 1970 Dusters in my whole town, I own one and I'm hopefully going to buy the other for my son if all goes well (I get it cheap enough). I was at the GOODGUYS show today and someone had a 1970 Duster with a 6Cyl for sale for like $3700.00 or $3900.00 I think that was too much but...

And to answer your question have I done something as stupid as that?......ah :?......never..:roll:.....LOL..Ok there was that time about twenty years ago when I turned down buying a sweet 1967 Charger original black on white for $5000.00 obo from a friend, Oh I almost forgot, it had it's numbers matching 426 HEMI still sitting under the hood!!!, and then theres the time I sold my 1970 Challenger R/T 383 (I still miss this car), and my 1968 Charger R/T factory 440 4 speed car, and my.......
I'm sure it happens to everyone sometimes. I do this at swap meets all the time, I get my mind set on a price limit and forget to ask myself, is it still a deal at there price? If so buy it.
 
The paper i put the ad in only comes out once a week,so i'm gonna place the ad this week and HOPEFULLY the guy will see it and call me again :!: I just hope it's as nice as he claimed it is.I'll keep you guys posted,maybe i can redeim myself :D
 
He's going to call you and tell you its gone he left it go for 750.
and to answer your question yep been there done that.

Are you talking about the "Valley trader" from the Shenandoah Valley?
That's were I found my Barracuda, It was listed in there for a couple of months for $850. I finally decided to take the 3 hour drive to check it out & bought it for $750. Running, drivable & complete, but looking like it had been sitting in a field for 10 years. (just like my sig pic)

NOT!!! Just kidding, when I found my Duster it was a slant six with Centerlines all around 275's out back...the guy wanted $3000 for it, the car looked bone straight...It had faded paint but no signs of rust... I wanted it so bad that I offered him $1500.....He jumped on it faster than I could finish saying it...I think I could have got it for much less than that...I wound up replacing 1/4's and part of the subframe...So if he calls you back and he's not a memeber of this board offer him $500 and see what he says...

When i talked to him,he told me the shape it's in he wouldn't let it go for less than a Grand.He never said how much he payed for it(Probably alot less!) I just placed the ad asking him to call me back,the paper comes out Thurs.so i'll just have to wait and see if he calls. :!: Cuda66 it's called the SHOPPER. :D

aint that a ... well, you know.
i want to get a two door dart, but i dont have the money right now. i want to get that one that i found online, but i have to save the money up first. now that i have half of my insurance costs coming out of my check, its gonna take me just a little bit longer, but not too much i guess.

Place the ad again. Another will turn up. After all, they only made about a trillion of the suckers.
 
I am guessing the guy still has the car. When he calls, make certain you do not jump at it. Say, "I still trying to buy a car for less than a grand. That's why I placed another ad. How much do you have to have for your car?" Let him set the price. But, do buy the car! :twisted:

I bought a 73 Duster Sports Coupe /6 with 37,078 miles on it. It belonged to an older lady but she had not paid for some work on it and gave the garage the car to cover the costs. It had been sitting under some trees for a long time. (But no rust!) The guy wanted $700 for it. I started it up and the rods had a knock in them when it first started. I told him I wanted a Duster to fix up but could not pay the $700 price for a car with a bad engine. I asked him how much he had in the car and he said $400. I paid him $400 and he was very happy to get his money. This car had disk brakes and bucket seats. It even had .85 torsion bars and a 727 tranny in it. Quite a good car to start restoring. We saved another one from the yard! :D

Nope no caller ID.The paper comes out tomorrow,i hope to here from him by the weekend.He claims the car is and always has been garage kept and that it's in very nice shape.So if he is honest about the condition i'll gladly give him a Grand for it.Right now i'm just hoping he see's the ad and calls me!
 
Since I have the space here, when I get calls about a car for sale, I almost always investigate and buy it!

Responding to an 18 year old thread:realcrazy::realcrazy::realcrazy: I would have thought there is plenty of stuff to talk about in this day and age without digging up skeletons out of the backyard.

Bought my 1st 71 swinger for a buck.
Salvage title.
Second car was $500 '74 dart custom 4 door. 3rd was $300 69 dart swinger
4th was originally $750...but in traded a trans install for it. '67 valiant.
Never paid more than $3500 for any mopar.. and that was a 70 340 duster 4spd
 
Bought my First car for 395; an almost pristine 1957 Belair 283/PG. It was however 12 years old. Sold it a year later with a burned up trans, for 75. That was the single-most bone-headed thing I ever did. Be kind, I was still 16/17.
