Breather Question

Is it necessary to have the breather vent into the air cleaner ? I wasn't sure if I got a breather w/o a vent line to the air cleaner, if that would cause any problems?

NO. I run a PCV on one side to the vacuum and the breather on the other side is an open element. You can get breather caps with a filter in them.

The only problem might be a smog requirement one in later years.

Well, it does keep the engine compartment "clean and fresh" if there's any blowby at all
