Can a newbie restore a 727 or 904 transmission ?

Hi Guys , bought my old duster back and im very happy , but i think my tranny is dying...but thats not the question today , im about to buy a spare 727 and i have a s6 and sblock 904 , bought 2x books on internet, i never did such a thing , i love my set up and its only a regular 727 / 2800 stall / shift kit trans...all the rest is stock ( internals ) it was rebuilt 12-13 years ago and i was thinking to redo one by myself , dont want to pay 2 000$ for one.

I've done both a 904 and 727, and I'm a newbie. It's not very hard, but you do need to pay attention to detail and be very clean. TAKE YOUR TIME and do not rush, and if the beers start going down easy, take the rest of the day off because you WILL miss a step/forget to install something/install something backwards. If something doesn't seem to be going together as easily as you think it should, STOP. Pull it apart and find out why. Don't force anything together. Double and triple check your work. Did I mention take your time?

I did my first 904 when I was 19 and I'm not God's gift to automatics. What I did was follow the FSM. When it said remove the pan bolts, I removed them and put them in an envelope labelled "Pan Bolts". When it came to go back together, everything was in envelopes and named what the FMS called them. Worked great.

As the others said, it’s not hard. One trick that will help is when you get to the blind seal, put the drum in the freezer with the seal on it wrapped in some of the rubber bands that asparagus is bundled with.

Right, drive that thing until it slips in really bad in all 3 gears and does not want to move, then you know it’s time for a rebuild…. That’s a buddies theory with his 67 cuda with a 360 and 904. He been trying to kill it for 10 years, he finely did it in last summer after a epic smoky burnout with crazy long snack tracks…. It was so epic it made to Facebook and the cops came by for a talking to us…

This was caused by a do it yourself rebuild and shift kit. 17 years old, Gone. His lower leg was still wrapped up in the floor when I towed it in.

If its just for a work car go for it. If your going to be shifting it at higher RPMs manually. Let a expert help you. The trans locked up shifting from 2nd to drive at high speed. The same trans did the same thing in a challenger it was installed in.

Ask yourself. Is it worth it? Think of this when you wind it up and shift it at RPMs for the first time. Two gears at once.

You can do it. I did my first one about 3 years ago. Follow @Righty Tighty and go slow...I probably triple or quadruple checked everything. Keep the area clean...I changed paper often, lol. In addition to the books, I used the old school video, stopping and reversing as needed. Runs great behind a warmed over 5.9 Magnum.
