I would like to mount a winch in my car hauler.......and for the life of me, I can figure out which winch to use. No one can give me a straight answer. Anyone here have this setup. My question is: What weight or winch do you use. There are a few different #numbers with a winch...like 3000#, 4000# and so on, rolling weight, dead weight....what the hey!
Thanks
JB

I think 3000# or 4000# would be how much it can pull total, rolling weight would be if your pulling something that can roll (a car in neutral) dead weight would be something that doesnt roll ( a broken Chevy :poke: )

mile marker #9500 winch here.will pull anything from tractors to cars on my trailer.or cars that will not roll.very very handy.i took it off of my jeep when i sold it.

I used to have a 8000lb winch on my old trailer. I pulled cars out of the mud that had been sinking in it for years. It was great. On my new one, I figured my car weighs about 3200-3300 lbs, so a #4000 would be plenty. I was wrong. It does the job, but nothing like what I had. I will always buy at least 2000lbs more than the heaviest vehicle own or ever plan to own now. Go BIG, you won't regret it.

Thanks for the replys...gives me some ideas....and what I am seeing are about 700.00 to 900.00 ...plus, for a winch?

You can always put a block on the vehicle you are pulling and run the hook back to the winch. that will give you a 2 to 1 pulling advantage. We use this method all the time for removing trees and pulling stuck skid steers out of the mud.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I was going to suggest this as well.

I got a cheap *** Harbor Freight 2000# winch, ($40 on sale with coupon), and it has pulled anything from a bodies with flat tires to c bodies onto my trailer.

It's not fast, but, has got the job done every time.

I got a cheap 2000# one also. Got it at a local parts store.
Just got it for the emergency. I have pulled C bodies and a
couple 3/4 ton trucks up on the trailer with it. It worked
very well when I broke at the strip last year. I have had it
for about 5 years. With no problems.

I have an 8,000 lbs warn wince in my trailer. It was a take off from a Bronco I had and just laying around the barn.

I would get at least a 4,000 for that just in case factor. Also have a block and tackle for the doubler for the really hard to move objects
